Chavez appoints official to govern Caracas
Source: AP

CARACAS, Venezuela – President Hugo Chavez has appointed a member of his ruling party as the top authority in Venezuela's capital.

Jacqueline Farias will assume most of the administrative responsibilities previously held by Caracas Mayor Antonio Ledezma, who defeated a Chavez-backed candidate in November elections.

The new post held by Farias was created under legislation approved last week by the predominantly pro-Chavez National Assembly.

Ledezma has criticized the legislation as a new attempt by Venezuela's socialist president to expand his power and weaken his opponents. The mayor plans to challenge the legislation through a referendum.

6. The AP missed this story.

Caracas mayor tells Venezuela's military to ignore Chavez

March 30

In a stunning show of defiance, Caracas Mayor Antonio Ledezma called on Venezuela's military forces to disobey orders from President Chávez because they are against constitutional law.

El Pais reported today that the mayor made this known during a protest which took place on Saturday in the city of San Cristóbal, and which was organized by mayors, governors, deputies, and opposition student leaders. The protest was against centralization and in support of Maracaibo mayor, Manuel Rosales, who is under judicial inquiry.

On March 22nd, 2009, Hugo Chávez ordered the army to take back control of the country's harbors and airport facilities, which according to the government, must be administered by the central government. The opposition, which holds mayors in three main Venezuelan ports, asserts that these have to stay under control of local authorities.

22. Imagine if the the Mayor of Los Angles called for the military to disobey orders from President
and declared the Port of Los Angeles and LAX airport out of federal control. LOL

This mayor from Caracas & the governor from Texas would get along.

27. But if "bushco " appointed a loyal member to assume the duties of the mayors office, you OK w/ it
Edited on Mon Apr-20-09 08:16 PM by ohio2007
Sure he's going to ask the military to stand down while the courts figure out how #43 or #44 could reassign the office to someone that 'the people' didn't elect.

That is in step with your analogy, right?
that is ;

If *co reappointed, by decree, the office of mayor that was held by an elected democrat, you would be all for it

What if #44 Obama appointed a loyal party member to the post of governor of a red state ? Would that be acceptable?

well
#1 Hugo is looking into doing just that in three states you know.

not under federal jurisdiction& control but under the jurisdiction & control of local authorities, and he is giving orders to the army to stand down. Apparently, this guy didn't get the memo that he is the Mayor of Caracas and not the president
of Venezuela.

23. How's this any worse than what the Rethugs have done to D.C.?
The Rethugs in Congress imposed a school voucher "experiment" on D.C. that nobody wanted. They also overrode D.C. gay rights laws.

Yet everyone goes through gyrations to defend the Rethug Nazis.

Telling the military to ignore orders from the commander in chief is reason enough to replace him.

Venezuela waives historical stance in border dispute with Colombia

A Venezuelan member of the Presidential Commission for the Delimitation of Sea and Undersea Waters with Colombia rejected a draft agreement between the two countries by saying that it was "a simple division" of the area to the detriment of the Venezuelan interests.

The predominantly pro-Chavez National Assembly and their dictator may have a bloody future in their hands
if they keep ramming their dogma and anti-democratic agenda down the throats of the good people of Venezuela.

30. Venezuelan opposition leader applies for political asylum in Peru
Venezuelan opposition leader applies for political asylum in Peru

...the attorney of Manuel Rosales -incumbent mayor of Maracaibo city and a major Venezuelan opposition leader- said that his client has officially requested political asylum in Peru.

snip

"According to the Peruvian jurisprudence and historical tradition of asylum, Peru should grant asylum to this man, because he is a political leader, a man with a top government post."

"President Hugo Chávez has gone too far by making heated statements against Rosales in squares and stadiums. This raises doubts about the possibility of getting a fair trial. Under these circumstances, Peru must grant asylum to Rosales, since it cannot break a democratic tradition of asylum dating back to the independence days and comprising a myriad of cases."
