Toddler who died of swine flu visited Houston mall
Source: Whashington Post

A Mexico City toddler who became the first swine-flu death on U.S. soil spent a day with his family shopping at a huge Houston indoor mall the day before he began to show symptoms.

Cameron County Judge Carlos Cascos says the Brownsville family with whom the toddler was staying said they spent three nights in Houston just before he fell ill.

could it be that the origin of this flu may not be in Mexico?

2. People have been dying of it in MX for awhile, so no,
I wouldn't think it originated elsewhere.

3. Mexican officials identified a young boy as the probable "patient zero".

Going back over their records they realized he had the flu months ago.

Read it yesterday, but don't have the link. Sorry.

4. I guess that is just speculation " Patient Zero"
is a 4 year old kid which was the first test that came out positive after a series of test when they notice that 3 other children die, so it could be that many other people have contracted the flu around the world and not tested nor die.

7. Well, I did hear that Pres. Obama gave all Mexican children ponies when he visited...
So I guess it's possible he gave the child the flu.

:P

8. Michelle Bachmann noted that the last time we had this, a Democrat [sic]
President was in office back in 1976, so I'm certain this has been lying dormant just waiting for another Dem Prez...

Of course, you must ignore the fact that Gerald Ford (a Republican) was President in 1976, and Bill Clinton was a Dem as well...oh well...you know how Bachmann is.

9. Uh, no, flu is fast but it's not quite THAT fast, lol.
Besides, where's the vast numbers of flu victims in Houston if it started there??

Some days I wish basic epidemiology was taught to all Americans in high school. But there are too many prerequisites........

10. Isn't the incubation period for influenza 1-4 days?
That would about fit into the time frame for the child to have arrived in the US already infected but not yet showing symptoms.

12. According to the CDC, 7 days.

(But yeah, I agree, the child in Houston didn't start it. Mexico was dealing with it well before that.)

14. Probably not true
The incubation period is up to 7 days.

The point here is that a toddler who wasn't yet sick but who was shedding virus was in a mall. That means the disease is likely to appear in Houston for some time.

The good news is that it appears early reports out of Mexico were in error and that this isn't the big one.
