UN decries Sri Lanka 'bloodbath;' 106 children die
Source: AP

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka – The United Nations condemned a "bloodbath" in Sri Lanka's northern war zone Monday after two days of shelling that a government doctor said killed as many as 1,000 ethnic Tamil civilians — including 106 children.

Volunteers dug mass graves in the marshland, putting 50 to 60 bodies in each pit, according to Dr. V. Shanmugarajah, who works at a makeshift hospital in the war zone. He said one nurse was killed along with his family in a trench that was then filled with soil and turned into their grave.

Shanmugarajah said the hospital was so short-staffed that many of those wounded in the first barrage late Saturday had still not been treated Monday morning. "The hospital death rate is increasing, but we are helpless," he said.

1. This is horrible! :( where is the international condemnation??
Edited on Mon May-11-09 11:35 AM by Vehl
Im shocked that the US and the other countries have not condemned this outrage. Almost a 1000 civilians death and another ~1400 wounded in just 24 hours by the Lankan Military's Arty barrage and im yet to see any formal censure..........

no wonder the Lankan government bans journalists from these areas. Yesterday they deported British journalists for bringing to light the mass human rights abuses by the Lankan government....and The British and Danish Diplomats were evicted too.

a few days back the UN released satellite images showing that the Lankan military used heavy weapons(Ariel bombing/shelling) indiscriminately on areas filled with civilians
http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/asia/article6201379.ece

just cos this is not the middle east...no one really cares to pay much attention :(
and no wonder...with China shooting down every motion brought to the UN security council about this issue....needless to say; China is Srilanka's Biggest arms supplier...in return its getting a new port/listening post facility there.

4. A bit from the UK
British Foreign Secretary David Miliband said on Monday he was appalled by reports that hundreds of Sri Lankan civilians were killed during the weekend in what the United Nations has described as a "bloodbath."

Miliband raised doubts about whether Colombo could be trusted at the moment to use a $1.9 billion loan from the International Monetary Fund appropriately.

"I am appalled by reports that came out of Sri Lanka over the weekend of mass civilian casualties," he told reporters ahead of a U.N. Security Council meeting on unrelated matters.
...
Miliband and French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner will host a meeting on Monday of concerned U.N. delegations and non-governmental organizations active on the ground at which they hope to increase pressure on Colombia to protect civilians and allow journalists and aid workers into the conflict zone.

(I think that last para should read 'Colombo' again; I can't blame this on Colombia :D )

6. posters crop up in Lanka claiming Hillary Clinton, David Miliband are trrorists! :P
Edited on Mon May-11-09 01:03 PM by Vehl
well the UK message is s breath of fresh air.

Btw; there are posters cropping up all over Colombo(Srilanka) accusing him and other western diplomats of being "terrorists"
Posters accusing British Foreign Secretary David Miliband, U.S. Seceratary of State Hillary Clinton and Norweigan politician Eric Solheim of aiding the Tamil Tiger rebels are stuck to a wall on a main street in central Colombo April 29, 2009.

picture of a poster(which im pretty sure would be the work of the SriLankan government)

on a relate note; The British Foreign Secretary David Miliband was shouted at by the Lankan presidents brother(while visiting lanka recently on a fact finding trip) when Miliband was critical of the Lankan military's human rights abuses.

9. China's interests are at stake so they have silenced the criticism
Just the facts. They want their "String of Pearls" pacified and safe from uprisings. They get their oil from the Persian Gulf and see the area turning more volatile every day.

Already the new port being built in the southern Hambantota (in Srilanka) area by the chinese would be turned over to China by the Srilankan government.

Im just sicked how China goes about propping up genocidal regimes around the globe, from Sudan to SriLanka

ps: China protects the lankan government from UN censure not because it wants the area "pacified" (if one wants pacification what better way than to encourage true democracy?) but cos it wants listening stations to spy on India. Also ive noticed that China goes out of its way to support oppressive regimes cos it does not want the Oppressed Tibetans to get any ideas .

the UN is looking more and more like the league of nations...with despotic regimes reigning unchecked.

Why the majority of people think the bulk of Saudi oil flows to the US is beyond reason.US is the policemen for the EU supply.

Video of the Attack's aftermath...*warning* might contain grusome images

http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2009/may/11/sri-lanka-civilian-deaths

the sight of those poor children and civilians lying about wounded and dying in the ground really breaks my heart. It pisses me off royally; not only at the government of SL and its military who did this but also at the Chinese and Russians who veto every motion brought against Srilanka in the UN security council. For them the death of thousands of innocents is secondary to their arms sales/aspiration for a naval port in that region.

7. The Documentary the Deported british Journalists took

The Srilankan government deported the British journalists belonging to channel 4 news agency for showing what really happens to civilians in the military internment camps set up by the government.

Kudos to the journalists who braved many a danger to smuggle this video out from under the watchful eye of their government "minders"

12. Help vote for International intervention in this CNN Poll
Edited on Mon May-11-09 08:51 PM by Vehl
CNN international has a poll today asking if international community should intervene(UN monitors, fact finding missions, diplomatic pressure..)

if possible vote yes so this issue might get more visibility in the Media..especially over here in America. It takes only a split second to vote; but would help the voices of these civilians be heard better..hopefully
right now its merely relegated to the scrolling-text on tv :(

15. Doctor says 49 killed in Sri Lanka hospital attack! (again in the safe zone)
Edited on Tue May-12-09 02:41 AM by Vehl
This is beyond belief...!

one would have expected the Lankan government/Military to lay off their shelling after nearly 1000 people civilians in just one day yesterday, but they have gone ahead and mortared the only surviving medical center in the affected region...killing 49

Doctor says 49 killed in Sri Lanka hospital attack

A mortar shell struck the only functioning medical facility in Sri Lanka's northern war zone Tuesday morning, killing 49 patients and bystanders and wounding more than 50 others, a government health official in the area said.

By RAVI NESSMAN

Associated Press Writer
COLOMBO, Sri Lanka —

A mortar shell struck the only functioning medical facility in Sri Lanka's northern war zone Tuesday morning, killing 49 patients and bystanders and wounding more than 50 others, a government health official in the area said.

The attack came after a weekend of heavy shelling that killed hundreds of civilians trapped in the war zone. The military has denied accusations that it was still shelling the tiny coastal strip still under rebel control, which is packed with an estimated 50,000 civilians.

Dr. Thurairaja Varatharajah, the top government health official in the war zone, said a single mortar shell hit the admissions ward in the makeshift hospital Tuesday morning. In addition to the 49 killed, scores of others were injured - many with head and stomach wounds - and he expected the death toll to rise, he said.

Shells were still hitting the area hours later, including one that landed about 150 yards (meters) from the hospital, Varatharajah said.

A second hospital official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media, said a hospital administrator was among those killed.

Reports of the fighting are difficult to verify because the government bars journalists and aid workers from the war zone.
