No cut in H-1B visas for Indians: US Consul-General
Source: Express News Service

Express News Service First Published : 14 May 2009 04:25:00 AM ISTLast Updated : 14 May 2009 10:43:38 AM ISTHYDERABAD: There is no cut in H-1B visas for Indians, US Consul-General for Hyderabad, Cornelis M Keur, has clarified. While the US Government had made it clear that companies give preference to Americans in employment as the jobless rate had risen to 9 percent in the wake of the recession, there had been no significant change in the H-1B visa policy, Keur maintained.

In a programme organised by the Press Club, he described as misconceived the notion that H-1B visas were detrimental to jobs for US nationals. Raising the cap on H-1B visas would help promote economic growth by bringing in extraordinary and boosting competitiveness, he said. However, the slowdown had meant that companies receiving funds under the US Government’s bailout package would have difficulty hiring H1B workers

2. I wonder what proportion of the H1 visas go to which careers
Edited on Thu May-14-09 08:26 AM by stray cat
Not too many qualified Americans in the physical sciences with advanced degrees - whereas some people in other countries actually still get a good science education and go into the physical sciences for advanced training. Americans tend to like business school.

6. I'm so damn sick of hearing about this BS
When I'll be losing my job soon and have many friends in the field that are unemployed, as well.

I get most of my articles from the Indian media as well, because our fucked up media won't report on any of it.

9. I don't see how this can be true

I'm not advocating H1b sponsorship - but I do know that the 65,000 H1b quota has not been met for 2010 yet. This is unheard of - it's been met early for the last several years. Furthermore, I know that the INS is rejecting H1b transfers like mad right now.

The INS is all over consultancies filing multiple h1b's now. I work in IT consulting and I've seen tons of sub-contract issues related to this as of late.

A simple check of the INS site shows that they had to extend the quota deadline. So how can this person honestly say there hasn't been a change in sponsorships?
