Rick Perry: States will 'assert their independence'
Source: Politico

Republican Gov. Rick Perry said Thursday that he expects to see a number of states follow his home state of Texas in pushing resolutions that will “assert their independence from the federal government.”

“If this administration gets its way, we’ll all be the same. We’ll all be the way Washington wants us to be,” Perry said on a call with Gov. Mark Sanford (R-S.C.) and roughly 20,000 callers sponsored by the Republican Governors Association, and billed as Tea Party 2.0.

Asked by a caller about his support for a Texas state House resolution reaffirming the state's sovereignty under the tenth amendment, Perry said that the issue “goes right to the heart of what the tea parties are all about.”

“You are going to see more and more laws like that across the country where states assert their independence from the federal government,” he said on the call, which lasted for more than hour.

22. I can't stand him either
And he's itching to get in the game again. We have to trounce him in the primary.

Sad thing is that he has at least one good progressive working on his campaign. Jim Hightower. Broke my heart to see that recently.

Friedman says his advisers include Hightower, Lowell Lebermann and Richard “Racehorse” Haynes

By W. Gardner Selby | Tuesday, May 12, 2009

Kinky Friedman, exploring a fresh run for governor (this time as a Democrat), says he’s enlisted several well-known advisers, though he wasn’t clear what precisely they’d be doing to help him decide whether to run for governor.

Now he’d mentioned San Antonio lawyer Abel Dominguez and former Agriculture Commissioner Jim Hightower before. But Friedman hadn’t revealed commitments to advise from Austin businessman Lowell Lebermann, who’s a former University of Texas System regent and Austin City Council member, and Houston lawyer Richard “Racehorse” Haynes, who’s famous for his courtroom moxie.

"We’ve got a very smart, very diverse group of Texans working together to determine the best way for me to serve our state," Friedman said in a statement that hit my e-mail box between 1 and 2 a.m. Tuesday. "We are ready to get to work."

I wouldn't blame Hightower for trying to advise him.

20. They are certainly ignorant, almost beyond belief.
Every one of them that I know, uses the internet for no purpose other than to pass around inane racist and sexist jokes. They know next to nothing about politics, history and science, but they are the quickest and loudest when it comes to offering their opinions on all three of those subjects.

21. The 10th amendment
The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.

The federal government long ago overstretched it's power under the Constitution. Perry is an idiot but the government assumes too large a role in the exerting control over the states.

They may not have extended much comity under Republican rule- but I haven't seen anything enacted beyond Constitutional powers.

29. separation of state and federal powers is a powerful aid to our natural rights
This is the first time I find myself on the same side of the table with Perry, but as a general philosophy, having strong regional and local government is the best guarantee that regional and local matters will be handled with understanding of local concerns, and efficiency of action.

We live in a republic for a reason. It's pretty astonishing to me that those who hate the concentration of power and its abuses don't want checks on the growth of federal power.
