Iran vows to win war on drugs
Source: AFP

ZAHEDAN, Iran (AFP) — At first glance, it is just an innocent microwaveable spicy chicken sandwich, but the plastic pack smuggled across the border to Iran contains a shiny slab of premium cannabis made in Pakistan.

Iran gave foreign envoys to Tehran and journalists a rare tour on Wednesday of its restive eastern border in a bid to raise awareness and much-needed funds for its war on drugs.

The pack was among the dope on display by the counter-narcotics police, which seized about 1,000 tonnes of hashish, opium and heroin in 2008 -- reckoned to be about one-third of the amount smuggled to Iran.

The opium comes in different brands from "Khosh Nam" (Reputable) and "Setareh Hilmand" (Star of Hilmand) to "Jamileh" (Beautiful) proudly stamped on canvas bags.

1. I love how they move from talking about cannabis to heroin so effortlessly.
Iran's WOD sounds like it's modeled after ours.

2. Yeah but out there
I wouldn't dare smoke pot. I'm sure Iran's war of drugs is going to be more successful than ours. When you could possibly face the death penalty it works for most.

3. people have been using drugs for thousands of years
and nothing is going to change that, no matter how extreme. I'm sure that Iran will be brutal, but in the end, their so-called 'war' on drugs will be an abject failure, as they all have been throughout history.

5. Yeah, not worth it.
The Iranian regime might be harsh enough to make a WOD work.

6. there is a common enemy in the tri border region
KABUL, Afghanistan (CNN) -- Intense fighting between troops and militants has unfolded over the past few days in a hotbed of insurgents and narcotics trafficking in southern Afghanistan, NATO said in a statement Wednesday. The International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) said the fighting is in Marjah, a region in Helmand province 20 kilometers (more than 12 miles) southwest of the provincial capital of Lashkar Gah.

Recent successful operations against the insurgents in the area have prompted a buildup of militant forces and a spike in militant activity, said ISAF, which noted that Afghan security forces backed by international troops "recently seized a significant quantity of narcotics in the Marjah region."

ISAF said there is a "clear link" in Marjah "between the narcotics trade, corruption and the financing of the insurgency." It said the narcotics trade helps pay for weapons, bombs, and suicide bombers.
