WASHINGTON, July 28 /U.S. Newswire/At least for the time being, Senate Republican leaders have opted to shelve their so-called "nuclear" option to break the logjam over stalled judicial nominees. The Republicans, while frustrated by Democratic filibustering of several of President Bush's selections for the federal bench, still want to move legislation through the Senate -- and think the controversial parliamentary maneuver would infuriate Democrats, staff writer Geoff Earle reports in the July 29, 2003, issue of The Hill. "The nuclear option on judges, it rather clears the landscape," said Sen. Larry Craig (R-Idaho). If Republicans resort to the move, which would involve a ruling from the Senate parliamentarian that filibusters of executive nominations are unconstitutional, it would likely be later this year. ---
