President visits (Buchenwald concentration) camp linked to great-uncle's past

OHRDRUF, Germany (AP) — President Barack Obama's visit this week to the former Buchenwald concentration camp is a pilgrimage of sorts, taking him close to where his great-uncle served in Germany during World War II.

Charles Payne assisted in the liberation of the Ohrdruf labor camp, a subcamp of Buchenwald, as part of the 89th Infantry Division.

Obama is to visit Buchenwald — now a memorial to its estimated 250,000 inmates, nearly a quarter of whom were murdered there — on Friday as part of his European tour.

Nothing remains today of the Ohrdruf camp, set up in November 1944, where inmates were forced into hard labor, drilling an underground tunnel through a stone hillside to serve as a secret bunker for Adolf Hitler.

2. So true.
I toured Auschwitz a couple of years ago. It haunts me still.

3. Me too. Dachau. I didn't even make it inside, just walking through
the memorial at the entrance was making me ill.
