Ronald Reagan statue unveiled in Capitol Rotunda
Source: AP

A blue cloth cover was pulled from the seven-foot statue of the 40th president Wednesday as Mrs. Reagan, 87, and a crowd packed with Reagan era-policymakers, looked on in the Capitol's Rotunda. The statue cast Reagan flashing his legendary ah-shucks grin, the expression that transformed his face whenever he was ready to deliver the punchline of a joke.

31. I could get behind statutes of all of the presidents on display somewhere around there
That'd make sense historically, be fair, etc.

Reagan's apotheosis in particular makes me kind of stabby, though. Ugh.

33. I want to agree with you
but when I went to Disneyworld in 1974, Nixon was included in the hall of presidents and I thought (and still think) that it was completely inappropriate at the same time it was appropriate. The same for bush, bush, and reagan. (I'm too tired to capitalize or make sense right now.)

43. In this instance, I'd go along with a little public vandalism
The officials who caused this edifice to be erected know perfectly well that their hero is a divisive figure, hated by half of the population as much as he was adored by the other half. This came up before when they renamed Washington National Airport after their favorite bumbling idiot, over the vocal and voluble protests of the vast majority of the populations served by Washington National, most of whom are Democrats. Yet they bulldozed it through anyway, asserting that Washington National was a national treasure and therefore they could assert jurisdiction over it despite the protests of the people who owned, operated, supported, and used it.

This constant partisan effort on the part of Repukes to rewrite history in order to deify their warped fucktard and force him down the gagging throats of a resisting population deserves nothing but contempt and resistance. They want to misappropriate public monies and land to worship their evil god? Fine, then they can spend a few more bucks cleaning obscene graffiti off of him and explaining to the press why it is that, out of all of the monuments in DC, theirs is the only one that has to be guarded around the clock to keep it from being defaced.

However, Reagan was more devoted to the destruction of the middle class and deregulation was one of his many tools. According to Thom Hartmann Reagan did his best to price the middle class out of the California college system.

Gorbachev saw the folly of continuing the Cold War, so he peacefully dismantled the Soviet Union. And Reagan just happened to be there to grab the accolades of all his neo-con supporters.

Bonzo would have been proud...

25. the statue should include the murdered body of Romero
and the four nuns who were murdered and raped by what Reagan called "freedom fighters" - the Contras who were nothing more than murderers for corporations.

Reagan was a loathsome man. He broke the power of unions. He was a treasonous bastard who violated the constitution in defiance of Congress' demand to stop funding Central American terrorists.

He looooved the Taliban and turned away as they destroyed the lives of females.

It's repulsive to hear Obama laud Reagan. I know Obama does this because he's a politician first, last and always, but, honestly, it is a lie to claim that Reagan brought this nation together.

Reagan began the destruction that we now have to overcome.
