Norm Coleman Ready To Give Up Fight, Allies Say
Source: Huffington Post

National Republican Senatorial Committee Chairman John Cornyn on Wednesday suggested that former Sen. Norm Coleman's long fight was almost over, saying that he's support his old colleague "until he decides to hang it up one way or another."

Now Roll Call has reported that Coleman himself appears ready to hang it up pretty soon. While party leaders are prepared to back him in a fight to the Supreme Court, sources close to Coleman say that if he loses in the Minnesota Supreme Court he will accept the result.

About time! Apparently Gov. Pawlenty has already said he will abide by the Court ruling, which looks very much in favor of Franken.

Almost there!!!

...that we'll never get back.

But we have 5.5 years of fun to look forward to!

And considering his arrival will give the Dems 60, it will be something of a celebration.

Plus, he'll be hounded by the media for a few weeks given his unlikely story from comedian to Senator, so we'll see and hear him everywhere (though he might be noticeably absent on a certain channel called Faux News)!

5. Wow. How big of him.
He's dragged this out for 7 months after telling Franken to waive the state-mandated automatic recount and now after bombing before the Minnesota S.C. he's ready to hang it up? What a guy! I hope he has to pay every cent of Franken's attorney fees.

Now I hope Bill O'Reilly's head explodes when he has to report that SENATOR Franken will be sworn in. I doubt he'd have the balls to call a U.S. Senator "Senator Smiley' but we'll see about that. If he does, I think KO, Rachel and everyone else who sees how ridiculous this self-important ass is calls him "O'Falafel"

He'll go on as long as KKKarl and Rush tell him to. Its just that now the curve is not looking good. They have played this as long as they could as it was useful in keeping Al out of the senate. I think Norm has been pleading with his overlords to just let it go for awhile now, as this petulant behavior is killing any chance at a comeback, but the GOP are a disciplined lot, if nothing else.

"allowing" him to give up the fight instead of just saying he got his ass kicked, wasted taxpayer dollars and attempted to circumvent the election process and the will of the people.

How mighty special that Pawlenty "will abide the court ruling".

I am so sick of the republicans but I think I am sicker of the way the MSM allows them to frame things. If a Democrat did that, God and country would surely suffer and they would suffer heavily on a news loop on every channel every minute of the day.

26. Election reform is in the works at the state level and it's something Senator Franken can't touch
Election reform bills quietly advancing that would let Minnesota 'catch up' with much of nation

By Jay Weiner | Thursday, April 23, 2009

Away from the noise and glare of the Norm Coleman-Al Franken legal battle, a collection of election reform bills has been moving slowly and somewhat quietly through the Minnesota House and Senate.

Together, the pieces of legislation, if passed, would fundamentally change the way Minnesotans vote and the state's election system operates.

Moving toward final committee consideration — or, in some cases, already on the Senate or House floors — the bills would mean, among other things:
• Easier registration.
• Early voting at polling places using voting machines weeks before Election Day.
• Fewer absentee ballots and a substantial reduction in the administrative headaches that go with them.
• Less of a chance of an automatic publicly funded recount.
• The option of a postponed election in the event of a late-campaign controversy or tragedy, as in the death of Paul Wellstone 10 days before the 2002 U.S. Senate election.

Some rational heads in the GOP (they don't add up to more than 5 in number) are realizing that the current strategy of NO, HELL NO, sniffling, defending torture and fighting Sotomajor isn't winning. I think we will see a real battle now between the cooler heads and the ideologues. The ideologues think that if they just huff and puff enough, all the voters will come their way. For one I hope the ideologues win the argument as that assures a more progressive majority.

68. Sorry, the opposite is going to be true for some key votes - the Bayh boys and girls
are probably going to crush our souls. I hope Franken takes the Wellstone route to improvements for the people. Bayh - and boys and girls are about improvments for corporations. And then we have our worst destroyers - Feinstein and Schumer. I hope I'm right about Franken and wrong about the Bayh gang. I even hope I'm wrong about Feinstein and Schumer, but they have showed their hand and lay down too many times heartwrenching times.

79. But on other votes, we can pick off some Republicans.
For example, there's likely to be a filibuster against Dawn Johnsen, given that Obama committed the unpardonable sin of nominating an honest, intelligent lawyer to sit in Yoo's old seat at the Office of Legal Counsel. Specter hasn't said how he'll vote on the cloture motion. The good news, though, is that Richard Lugar (R-IN) has endorsed his constituent, Johnsen. That means that, once Al shows up, we can get to 60 even if Specter defects (as long as we can hold all the other Dems).

On many issues, Collins and Snowe will be prime targets for flipping a Republican. As Lugar's position illustrates, though, others are possibles on specific votes.

85. Our objective should also include seen as few Republicans as possible are re elected in 2012
It is a target rich environment.

With the success of our President Barack Obama, we have the opportunity to extend our power in the Senate by working to ensure some (or even all) of the following elections have a Democrat in the seat when 2011 rolls around.

Bennett, Robert F. - (R - UT)
Bond, Christopher S. - (R - MO)
Brownback, Sam - (R - KS)
Bunning, Jim - (R - KY)
Burr, Richard - (R - NC
Coburn, Tom - (R - OK)
Crapo, Mike - (R - ID)
DeMint, Jim - (R - SC)
Grassley, Chuck - (R - IA)
Gregg, Judd - (R - NH)
Isakson, Johnny - (R - GA)
Martinez, Mel - (R - FL)
McCain, John - (R - AZ)
Murkowski, Lisa - (R - AK)
Shelby, Richard C. - (R - AL)
Thune, John - (R - SD)
Vitter, David - (R - LA)
Voinovich, George V. - (R - OH)

88. If our Senate Majority Leader, the Honorable Harry Reid, would be somewhat more aggressive
If our Senate Majority Leader, the Honorable Harry Reid, would be somewhat more aggressive, the Democratic Party as a whole would be much better off. We need to speak with one voice, a back our most important legislation first. If we are successful with the big bills, the Republicans will be shown for the party of special interests that they are.

Particularly if the Minnesota SC goes 5-0 against Norm.

73. This probably looks like a success for Ginzberg - he kept Franken out for six puls months.
No one will remember the name of Coleman's lawyer - Friedburg.

People will remember Coleman with derision.

There will be a very key memory for me. I ask others to please remember the name of Ben Ginzberg. A key Republican operative from the big leauges of Republicanism was sent to Minnesota to lead the strategy of delaying Franken and trying to find an angle. He was there the entire time. He was there in 2000. He is always there. There will be no reason to change my mind about him. I ask you to remember his name as the guide through this delay. The fund raiser. The stick. The prod. The schemer.

76. I kind of got the feeling he might give up from his reaction to Franken's certification request
I honestly kind of the got the feeling a few weeks ago when Franken asked the state supreme court to force the governor to sign the certification of election and Coleman's nonreaction to it that he wasn't really in the mood to keep the fight going on forever. Maybe this is part of why GOP governor has signaled a willingness to sign the certification recently, because he knows Coleman will stop after the state supreme court.

81. There are ballots that are being contested
If the Court rules that the methods the counties used to determine eligible ballots is not uniform (Coleman's argument) then the counties would have to come up with a method that is acceptable to the Court which determines legitimate ballots

87. Yet another reason to love Al Franken
From the book LIVE from NEW YORK – a quote from Tom Davis

“One day Henry Kissinger calls up and the call is picked up at an NBC page’s desk. And the page goes, “Henry Kissinger’s on the phone. He wants tickets for his son.” And Al grabs the phone and yells into it, “You know, if it hadn’t been for the Christmas bombing in Cambodia, you could’ve had your fucking tickets!”

Seat the man for Chrissakes, we need this voice in the Senate.

now that Gov. Pawlenty has said he won't seek reelection.

We have the likes of Coleman and probably Michelle Bachmann running under the GOP flag. The DFL might finally have a shot at retaking the Minnesota Governor's office. They usually loses because there's always a left-leaning Independent candidate and Green Party candidate.
