House Panel Rejects Funding To Transfer Guantanamo Inmates
Source: AFP

WASHINGTON (AFP)--U.S. lawmakers dealt another blow Thursday to President Barack Obama's plans to close the Guantanamo prison, denying a request for extra funds and restricting the transfer and release of inmates.
A House Appropriations subcommittee threw out a request for $60 million to help the department close the prison on the U.S. naval base in southern Cuba.

It approved a $64.4 billion 2010 funding bill for the Justice Department and other agencies, but attached conditions on releasing Guantanamo inmates.

The bill would see the government barred from releasing any of the 240 remaining prisoners to the United States or to any other country until the administration has presented a plan to Congress.

The panel's decision was the latest blow to Obama's efforts to close the prison by Jan. 22, 2010, which have run into opposition at home amid fears the inmates could be released onto U.S. territory.

1. Asking to see what you are funding before handing over the money.
Interesting concept. I like it.

4. really, cause no one asked how long the gitmo detainees were going to be held
when they were placed there. And DETAINEES, remember. Few of them have been tried for anything. Which is why republicans dont want them on US soil, cause then we actually have to process them, or release them.

Its bullshit. They are pandering to the "terrorists on US soil" Fox news bullshit.

2. If only they were so concerned about the BILLIONS handed to AIG et al - laughable lawmakers

but look at these people - some of them have risen up the lowly ranks of idiocy to take their place at the higher throne of idiocy - our Congress.

If a Bachmann can get in, who can't?
