Islamist urges al Qaeda to open up to Obama's offer
Source: Reuters

CAIRO, June 6 (Reuters) - A leader of an Islamist group that waged an insurgency in Egypt in the 1990s called on Saturday for al Qaeda and the Taliban to consider an opening offered by the U.S. president and call a halt to attacks on U.S. civilians.

Essam Derbala, a member of the leadership council of Al-Gama'a Al-Islamiya, or Islamic Group, made the appeal after President Barack Obama said in Cairo on Thursday he wanted a "new beginning" in ties between Washington and the Muslim world.

Islamist thinkers and groups in Egypt have long inspired Islamic movements around the world.
<...>

"I call on the Taliban of Afghanistan and Pakistan and al Qaeda to look at this solution and put the American side to a real test of the extent of its sincerity in achieving peace with the Muslim world," Derbala told Reuters.

<...>

Al-Gama'a Al-Islamiya waged an insurrection in the 1990s that was crushed by the security forces and its members were thrown in prison, from where leadership figures such as Derbala renounced violence. Derbala was freed with many others in 2006.

Given that Egypt is the epicenter of the Muslim Brotherhood, this is a fairly positive reception. Nevertheless, I don't image al Qaeda, or Mullah Omar's Taliban budging one inch.

1. No one thought Gandhi had a chance when he started, either. Derbala is a brave man.

2. Someone remind me what "Islamist" means again.
The adjective modifier would be "Islamic," right? How do we tell someone who is "Islamic" from someone who is "Islamist"?

Or does the media do that for us?

4. Like an evangelist or activist for Islam.
Someone who promotes the religion vs. just practices it.

That's my guess.

10. Precisely.
In the exact same sense that Torquemada promoted Catholicism in Spain, instead of just practicing it.

Is·lam·ism (ĭs-lä'mĭz'əm, ĭz-, ĭs'lə-, ĭz'-)
n.
1. An Islamic revivalist movement, often characterized by moral conservatism, literalism, and the attempt to implement Islamic values in all spheres of life.
2. The religious faith, principles, or cause of Islam.
Is·lam'ist adj. & n.

Notice that (2) is fairly archaic or would bear Websters "obs." marking at the present.

As a corollary, you get to work out how "conservatism, literalism, and the attempt to implement Islamic values in all spheres of life" affects those not so predisposed.

9. It's a recent word.
So the adjectival form is the same as the nominal.

An Islamist, an Islamist preacher, an Islamist orientation.

"Islamic" is the adj. for "Islam".

It's like saying 'apple' is the noun, so what's the adjective? "Apply?" "Applic"? "Applous"? Nah, just "apple," as in "apple pie".

It's English going closer to its Germanic roots, even though I keep hearing from people who have learned the prestige form that only the prestige form of English is actually grammatical--leaving most of the English-speaking world speaking "ungrammatically". Chomsky would be horrified at the idea, as would his old enemy from the language wars, Lakoff.

15. Don't mind him, AL is a closet insomniac
He is clueless in current events and would prefer to spit in the face of those that actually hold his interests in the balance

14. Face it,the truth is your team is going DOWN
Even though you don't want to really look that close as to what your fundies are doing, somebody close to the epicenter has access to the internet and is posting the truth. Some are beginning to take a stand against your beloved Brutus freedom fighters .

Upper Dir tribesmen avenge mosque blast, attack Taliban

ISLAMABAD: Hundreds of tribesmen banded together and attacked Taliban strongholds in a troubled northwestern region to avenge a deadly suicide bombing at a local mosque, a top government official said Sunday. The incident Saturday underscored a swing in the national mood toward a more anti-Taliban stance —a shift that comes as suicide attacks have surged and the military wages an offensive against the Taliban in the Swat Valley.

snip
The citizens' militia has occupied three of the villages since Saturday and is trying to push the Taliban out of the other two. Some 20 houses suspected of harbouring Taliban were destroyed, he said. At least four militants were killed, he said.

Shouldn't you be demanding these villagers be brought to justice for killing innocent women and children in these 'ocupied' villages?

You can't handle the truth A.L.
