5. What great news? The one who won is the most conservative.....
he won NRA's vote (even over the Repub McDonnell) because he believes that guns in bars are AOK! Brian Moran was the most progressive of the three. He worked to ban the horrible contract against gays in VA. I am disappointed in Brian because I saw NO TV ads from him, I received NO calls from him--apparently he had plenty of money so why did he not use it for advertising? I saw so many ads from Creigh Deeds and had so many calls from Creigh Deeds and Terry McAullife. Where were Brian Moran's ads and calls?????

10. Dems have a big tent, and Virginia is still a somewhat conservative state.

34. bingo, especially away from the so called socialist republics of NOVA
the RVA is still very conservative and you have to appeal to that conservatism in order to win, Guns are an important issue throughout VA as is transportation, gay rights is not that important an issue outside of a few metro areas so in order to win you got to appeal across the state.

26. Did Moran have the least money? If not, there's no excuse. If he had enough $$ to run a great
campaign, but didn't, maybe that says something. too.

8. Deeds Surges to Stunning Win in Va. (article)
Washington Post

Running with the least money and fewest ties to vote-rich Northern Virginia, State Sen. R. Creigh Deeds has won the three-way Democratic primary for governor, paving the way for a rematch with Republican Bob McDonnell in the fall.

Deeds, 51, a country lawyer from Bath County in the western part of the state, was viewed as an unlikely winner against two Northern Virginians with entrenched political ties.

Known for his moderate views on such issues as gun rights, but also appreciated for his folksy style and attention to the Washington suburbs' cry for road improvements, Deeds was leading in Fairfax, Arlington, Loudoun and Prince William counties.

Deeds had almost doubled the vote totals of each of his opponents, Democratic activist Terry McAuliffe and former Del. Brian Moran.

9. Moderate views on gun rights??? I suggest you look them up...
He won the most votes from NRA because he thinks it is wonderful to take your gun to bars!!!! I hope I am never in a bar in which his proponents have brought their Glocks to their favorite bar and a nice little brouhaha breaks out!

14. trickle? it was twice as many as turned out in 2006 for the Senatorial primary
around 320,000 turned out for the Democratic primary, not a huge number, but more than twice as many as have showed up for a Democratic primary for a statewide office in Virginia in many years. Heck, in 2004, only 390,000 showed up for the Democratic PRESIDENTIAL primary.

17. Never pictured McAuliffe running for public office.
He always seemed like a professional Democrat who was raised to take party jobs, as some kids are raised to follow their dads into the auto plant, and he never appeared to have much interest in policy or principles.

but I'm surprised Terry McAuliffe had that bad a showing despite his money and resources...granted, i predicted a year ago Terry's act would not sell well for a multitude of reasons, but it's so rare that i'm proven right about anything these days...
