Obama declares time to fix health care is now

By PHILIP ELLIOTT, Associated Press Writer – 54 mins ago
GREEN BAY, Wis. – President Barack Obama went to the nation's heartland Thursday to challenge critics of his proposed health care overhaul, asking: "What's the alternative?" Obama has run into opposition from fellow Democrats in Congress and the nation's largest doctors' association.

Dismissing criticism, Obama attempted to sell his proposals directly to Americans. He did not directly respond to the American Medical Association's president, who remains unconvinced of the wisdom of the White House's call for a public health plan. Instead, Obama broadly described his critics as naysayers.

"I know there are some who believe that reform is too expensive, but I can assure you that doing nothing will cost us far more in the coming years," Obama said. "Our deficits will be higher. Our premiums will go up. Our wages will be lower, our jobs will be fewer, and our businesses will suffer."

The president's warnings come as reservations have been expressed by health care providers, Congress — led by Obama's fellow Democrats — and the public. During the brief ride from the airport to a town hall-style meeting, Obama passed several hundred protesters. Many held signs such as "NObama" and "No to Socialism." White House aides brushed off the protests and instead focused on the president's message of the day: Inaction on health care overhaul is too dangerous to put off and would cost money the country simply doesn't have.

1. I just hope "reform" isn't a code word for "further aiding and entrenching the insurance companies".

3. I'm afraid it will be.
Every time a leader says, "There's no time to lose! Trust me, I'll save you!" you're about to be shafted.

Patriot Act...

TARP...

etc...

7. I'm hanging on to hope.
We have ONE CHANCE to get it right. I know the spin and the opposition are atrocious. Did we expect any different? I also realize the words coming out of President Obama's mouth cause concern from time to time.

But listening to Howard Dean, and viewing clips of people that have spoken at the hearings....I can't help but "hope" our government will get it right. The days of the insurance companies running things for profit at our expense MUST come to an end. I could be wrong....but I'm hoping the President is going to hold on for real reform.

We need to keep pushing our legislators...every one of them. Remember, the corporations OWN too many of them, and would love to own them all. It's gonna be a tough battle, but one we have to win.

5. The audience appauled when the President stated that a public option
would include insurance companies accepting people with pre-existing conditions. BUT, I want to know at what cost? We've all seen ads for no good credit...no problem....it's just your interest will be sky high. There must be limits on premiums and care must be of equal value to all. imho

12. He wants a public option to compete with insurance companies. If you want to keep your employer
Edited on Thu Jun-11-09 04:00 PM by bkkyosemite
insurance you can. They will make it so the public option is not a good one so you will have to keep whatever you have. He said during his campaign he wants Univeral Healthcare, Single Payer and now he is saying no to it. His public option is not Single Payer, is not Universal it is in bed with the insurance companies (my opinion) pr at least appeasing them. Insurance companies should not be allowed to oversee our health..profit pigs.

14. No More Nonsense
I just heard Kent Conrad explaining his lame co-op proposal - which would -gasp - maybe cut our costs 20% - not from what it is now, but from what it would otherwise rise to. That plan is complete BS, either Conrad is not too bright or he's in the lobbyists pocket - probably both.

He said the same thing Sherrod Brown said - there aren't the votes for single payer. Well, instead of lame brained ideas like Conrad's,he, Sherrod and others better find the votes.

The people speaking against it are flat out lying and it's time to call them on it while exposing how much they are getting from the medical industry coffers.
