Panetta: Finding Al Qaeda Leader Still A Top Priority; Pakistan's Crackdown On Militants Helping

(CBS/AP) CIA Director Leon Panetta says he believes Osama bin Laden is still in Pakistan. The spy agency hopes to close in on the al Qaeda leader as Pakistan's military cracks down on the tribal area where he is thought to be hiding.

Panetta told reporters after a speech on Capitol Hill that finding bin Laden remains one of the CIA's top priorities. He said he hopes that the combination of increased CIA activity and the Pakistani military offensive will give the United States a better chance of nabbing him.

Panetta said in his speech that the CIA has increased the number of officers and agents in Pakistan who are providing targeting and other information to attack the al Qaeda network there.

The new assessment comes as Pakistan has unleashed a new military campaign in the country’s Waziristan region along the Afghan border, driven mainly by a combination "quick strikes" on suspected Taliban militant targets as well as all out attacks, senior government officials and Western diplomats said, reports CBS News' Farhan Bokari.

3. You know how you can tell the CIA wasn't involved in Kennedy's assassination?
He's dead, isn't he?

I doubt the CIA has any clear idea of whether Bin Laden is alive or dead, but if he's dead their budget is going to be a lot smaller, so they base their assumptions accordingly.

23. If CIA's so incompetent, why do so few Americans know that it helped NAZIs escape after WW2?
Know your BFEE: Spawn of Wall Street and the Third Reich

Few Americans also know that CIA even incorporated large numbers of NAZIs in its ranks?

CIA Started by NAZI Sympathizers and Staffed by NAZIs...

Oh yeah, not that there's anything funny in the assassination of President Kennedy, but wouldn't Americans find it ironic to know that two CIA NAZI-connected "leaders" served on the Warren Commission?

A fact curiously missing from American history and any mention of the Warren Commission

36. I didn't say that. Just that most of the money and power is in their pockets.
And by "their" I mean those connected to their stooges, the Bushes, including Wall Street, Big Oil, the Military Industrial Complex and the Mafia. It's the "American Gestapo" President Truman feared.

Look around. You'll see a Congress intent on protecting the interests of the ownership class, two illegal and immoral wars without end, an emptied Treasury, and a penured middle class. Not a coincidence -- it's the workings of Capitalism's Invisible Army.

33. Please.
If any government agency actually wanted JFK dead he'd have been dead of natural causes in the bed of some cute staffer. No one with any experience or intelligence would have chosen to shoot him in Dealy Plaza. Most of the places people imagine shooters--the overpass, the Grassy Knoll--were physically impossible to shoot from, and the only places a shooter had a chance were from the School Book Depository or the building across the street, and those were too visible and too hard to control access to to be sure of invisibility.

It was an assassination of opportunity by a loner. If there had been a broader plan, it wouldn't have happened there.

4. CIA's credibility intact again?
Even if he is alive, the war there is not justified. The US should pull out of Afghanistan, and Iraq, as promised. Every US soldier killed there is a needless tragedy. We don't hear about casualties, or anything for that matter, from the media anymore. Is that to makes us accept it, and make it OK now that Bush is gone?

Why are our soldiers being killed there if Osoma isnt there?
I also want to know why it is ok to kill thousands of innocent civilians to get one man?

Who believes the USA anymore?

Only the fools that let a sociopath like Bush run the country for 8 years.

The rest of the World knows better.

It is getting very close to the time that the USA is gonna have to pay up for all it's evil wars/invasions/coups of the last 50 years.

"What goes around . . ."

you know the rest . .

18. in light of the debacle in iraq -- and torture and gitmo -- what's the meaning
of bin laden any more?

there would have been an action of real justice if we had gone after him in some kind of sane fashion in the beginning -- not whored ourselves to musharef and on and on.

the meaning of bin laden is as buried as i think he is.

and if he isn't --

34. re: CIA Says Bin Laden Still In Pakistan
The CIA, isn't that the agency that intentionally allowed the al Qaeda terrorists to carry out the attacks on 9/11?

In fact isn't there now inconvertible proof of this located right on the US government's own web sites and sources?
