Plan targets fallout from mountaintop mining
Source: Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Obama administration on Thursday announced steps to reduce the environmental destruction caused in six states by mountaintop coal mining.

The government will seek to eliminate the expedited reviews that have made it easier for mining companies to blast off Appalachian mountaintops and discard the rubble into valleys where streams flow.

The agreement among three federal agencies also includes changes to tighten federal oversight and environmental screening of mountaintop coal mining in Kentucky, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia.

Nancy Sutley, head of the White House Council on Environmental Quality, said the Interior Department, the Environmental Protection Agency and the Army Corps of Engineers will set clear standards, ensuring that communities in coal-mining regions have clean streams and drinking water.

3. Isn't there a ton of coal in Illinois?
Wouldn't that probably crush his support of his strongest base?

4. I'm pleased with this admin's incremental approach to MANY problems.
I recognize it frustrates many here, but its practical in this highly political environment, IMO.

"The administration's current plan is a good first step. ... We would like leaps," said Janet Keating, executive director of the Ohio Valley Environmental Coalition.

5. How big of them---clean streams and drinking water. What a step forward--NOT.
What about all the residue poured on American citizens' land? What about the damage to the beauty of of the mountains? What about requiring these companies to replant and restore these mountains? If there were true consequences, there would be no mountaintop removal?

6. Perhaps some controls are better than nothing
but the real solution would be to protect our country by not
devastating these mountains. Blow up a building and you are a
terrorist; blow up a mountain and you are a smart
businessperson. Further, it has already been stated by many
scientists that there is no such thing as clean coal and that
adding any greenhouse gases at this time is only pushing the
point of no return further. Does something strange happen to
people's brains when they win political office? Alaskan
villages and Pacific islands are already being lost to the
rising waters, while scientists worry that we may have already
reached the tipping point. If we don't move fast to get a
meaningful energy bill - and yes, we may all have to conserve
and change our habits - we could well be destroying our
children's futures.
