Appeals court blocks release of detainee pictures

By LARRY NEUMEISTER – 22 minutes ago

NEW YORK (AP) — The U.S. government can keep pictures of detainee abuse secret while it asks the Supreme Court to permanently block release of the photographs on the grounds they could incite violence in Afghanistan, Iraq and Pakistan, a federal appeals court said Thursday.

The one-paragraph ruling by the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Manhattan came after the Obama administration asked the court to keep the pictures secret so it could appeal to the nation's highest court.

The administration last month said the disturbing photographs pose "a clear and grave risk of inciting violence and riots against American and coalition forces, as well as civilian personnel, serving in Iraq and Afghanistan."

The appeals court stayed its order supporting a lower court judge's decision to order release of the photographs until the Supreme Court had a chance to consider the case.

6. We're worried about embarrassment in America, not violence in Iraq.

3. The same neocons who use holocaust pictures for
propaganda and sympathy refuse to release similar pictures of what was done to others.

They know the power those pictures represent -- the holocaust pictures have sustained the Israeli land grab and human rights abuses for decades.

4. Sorry, but pictures or no, the people have a right to fucking attack us!
We're occupying their countries! If we gave out wads of money (oh yeah, did that), and treated the indigenous people respectfully (tried in small ineffectual doses) and we shit flowers in the streets there would still be an insurgency.

Let's stop mincing words about this shit. The USA is a military empire and we won't let anything disrupt that if we can help it.

7. A population defends against invaders. One man's freedom fighter is another man's "insurgent."
