U.N. warns of catastrophe as hungry people top one billion
Source: Reuters

ROME (Reuters) - High food prices have pushed another 105 million people into hunger in the first half of 2009, the head of the U.N. World Food Programme said on Friday, raising the total number of hungry people to over 1 billion.

Urging rich nations at a meeting of G8 development ministers not to cut back on aid, Josette Sheeran said the world faced a human catastrophe as more people struggle to eat a decent meal.

"This year we are clocking in on average four million new hungry people a week, urgently hungry," Sheeran told Reuters.

"For the first six months of this year, 105 million people have been added," she said, citing figures to be released by the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization next week that will raise the total number of undernourished people to over 1 billion.

2. Hey, But Worldwide Free Trade Is Sooooo Beneficial ...
"It Has Literally Saved Millions From Poverty" :sarcasm:

Well, maybe... or perhaps there are too many humans on this planet to survive and that's the hypocritical way the communo-capitalist system has to make 'em disappear... Raise All Food Prices All The Time, After all, all food-market CEOs wanna become billionaires too. Who would blame them? They're just following the Rule$ of the Ruler$.

5. Take steps now toward food security
Food cost and supply will be the BIG story of the years ahead.

I've been reading about -- and implementing -- healthy, sustainable secure responses at this blog:

17. All people have the right to the "pursuit" of happiness...
for most people that pursuit means trying to have a family with children.

I dont think any government should tell its citizens that you can only have so many children, or place limits on who can or cant have kids.

I however have no problem with allowing people, and yes even their children suffer for making poor decisions. If you know you cannot support your family yet you still choose to make said family larger then you should deal with the consequences of it. Yes it sucks for them if there are deaths, but thats life, and we are in no danger of running out of people anytime soon.

23. The problem is that those making poor decisions take down other people with them
Their decision to have unsustainable numbers of children puts stress on local, national and global resources, which then makes it harder for people who had a responsible number of children to obtain enough of those resources for themselves and their families.

25. *DING* *DING* *DING* We have THE winner!
Why should your life or mine be compromised?

We are ALL in a society. We have the right to improve and better ourselves, but we also have the right to work within a system of laws and regulations and to think about those we work and live around too. If that's socialism, then so be it, but I work hard, study to improve and acquire more information to work with, and update with the greenest technologies. I am doing my part, and more, and once the 'clunkers for cash' program is signed I will be getting a hybrid or electric. I don't travel far and don't need to.

14. Good luck with that.
The choice of many nations is to control population thru starvation and war. Because that's moral and birth control isn't.

WHAT is keeping us from freezing it and shipping it to areas with lots of people going hungry?!

Sorry to say it so harsh, but if we're a global community then we all need to limit the number of offspring being made.
