The Seattle TimesSeattle Mayor Greg Nickels has been sworn in as president of the national Conference of Mayors.
Nickels took over as leader of the organization Monday at the final session of its meeting in Providence, R.I.
He called for the federal government to forge a "New Deal" with America's cities. Nickels says cities have been trapped in a structure that puts the federal government at the top of the chart, followed by the states.
The conference plans to accept a White House invitation to meet later this summer. But Nickels says it won't be able to make the administration's proposed date of June 29. He says the mayors want to develop an agenda on issues from the Providence meeting, including federal stimulus aid, gun control and the 2010 Census.
