Iran's Revolutionary Guards issue warning to media

By ALI AKBAR DAREINI, Associated Press Writers

TEHRAN, Iran – Iran's most powerful military force is warning online media of a crackdown over their coverage of the country's election crisis.

The Revolutionary Guards, an elite body answering to the supreme leader, says Iranian Web sites and bloggers must remove any materials that "create tension" or face legal action.

It is the Guards' first public statement since the crisis erupted following the presidential election last Friday.

Iranian reformist Web sites as well as blogs and Western Web sites like Facebook and Twitter have been vital conduits for Iranians to inform the world about protests over the declaration of election victory for hardline President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

The government barred foreign media Tuesday from leaving their offices to report on the street protests.

11. Separation of Church and State
This will be in store for us, if the right wing CHRISTIAN (used with Sarcasm) Nut Jobs ever take over this country.

A stunning example of the hateful ends, of mixing Nut-Job clerics with right wing Fascists

19. This is a prime example of the workings of a Theocracy.
The Republican Party's strategy beginning with Reagan was an alliance with two cultures in our society. His Southern Strategy was to exploit Southern racism and endorse the religious extremist views of the Christian fundamentalists. This ploy coupled with phony patriotism allowed the Bush-Cheney cabal to pursue their world domination policy as clearly spelled out in the PNAC manifesto. It has proven to be a difficult strategy to defeat. It is nearly impossible to rid people of their prejudices that have been cultivated by generations of ignorance and it is especially difficult to counter religious extremism without alienating more moderate Christians. They took our nation to the brink of ruination and it was only after people began to realize the extent of the damage have they pulled back from the brink that was fueled by the insatiable greed of those in command for both power and money. Heaven help us if we had totally subcomed to this dangerous combination that would have cast us into the depths of the Dark Ages.

3. These reports are so confusing.
"Iranian reformist Web sites as well as blogs and Western Web sites like Facebook and Twitter have been vital conduits for Iranians to inform the world about protests" -- so, have they been valuable conduits or were they shut down over the weekend as reported then?

BTW - was a shame your other post was moved given that your link cross linked to an accredited news source rather than just a blog.x( The fact remains that the whole subject remians suspicious to me given that it originated in the USA from an ex-student there and if you google everything goes back to that as the source.

I understand and agree with how you feel about starting threads in LBN from blogs (that's why I hadn't got involved with it until I found the article I posted there) but there are now other stories in that thread that are quoting the same things (apparently) directly from Montazeri's website.

I don't know the language but here's his site, if anyone can translate it: http://amontazeri.com/farsi/default.asp

10. I honestly wasn't having a go at you......
just the subject in general. One of these days we'll be set up and a real howler will be published in this way. Only an accredited news source can help prevent that. Most respectable blogs provide the source and in the absense of it being a recognisable news organisation I just don't believe the subject should be posted in LBN.

:hi:

17. That's hardly proof of *anything*
In doing so, I narrowed it down to a handful of people who have accounted for 30,000 Iran related tweets in the past few days. Each of them had some striking similarities -

1. They each created their twitter accounts on Saturday June 13th.

Why is this a surprise? Reports were that the students turned to twitter after the government shut down facebook, email and other e-communications. And how many is a handful?

2. Each had extremely high number of Tweets since creating their profiles.

Could there possibly be groups of people using a shared twitter account to communicate within their group?

3. “IranElection” was each of their most popular keyword

Because that's what they were discussing. Although it would have been smarter to have used a codeword, so maybe this is evidence of someone else possibly being involved.

4. With some very small exceptions, each were posting in ENGLISH.

They are educated students. Definitely they wanted to get their message out to the world, and maybe keep it out of less educated hands. Note also that many of the signs they carry in the msm photos are in ENGLISH or English and Farsi. As in the POLICE jackets.

5. Half of them had the exact same profile photo

Do you really expect them to identify themselves? Again, students were supposedly using twitter to organize protests. They're trying to hide their identities and get past their government.

6. Each had thousands of followers, with only a few friends. Most of their friends were EACH OTHER.

See #5.

So where is their proof that Israel was trying to disrupt the election? Or that all the twitters are fakes? There are a number of countries in the region that have interests there. Real evidence suggesting that Saudi Arabia financed Moussavi's campaign has already been discussed elsewhere.

20. Where did "Israel" get all those extras to walk in streets that to my eye looked JUST
like main boulevards in Iran, Esfahan, and Shiraz? And where did they get the GREAT looking, realistic appearing blood that poured from the wounds of these fake protesters?

What I found interesting is that much of the twittering was backed up with cell phone video that followed it.

25. Twitter, imo, is out of control spam crack news bytes
Obviously, the Iranian govt also has "university students" very active on twitter.

Some new Iranian breaking news forums popped up;

thats more of a digestable pace but still,
it could be a way to snag "miscreants" in country.

When it comes to believing what your seeing, live video feeds trump twitter spam bots any second of the day.

Amateur Video Shows 500,000 Iranians in Silent Mass Protest March

June 18 (Bloomberg) -- The leading challenger to Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad called for a mass demonstration today to mourn those killed in protests over the nation’s disputed presidential election.

Tens of thousands of supporters of Mir Hossein Mousavi rallied yesterday in the capital of Tehran in a fifth day of demonstrations, as Iran’s Foreign Ministry registered a diplomatic protest over what it called “interfering remarks” by U.S. officials since the vote.

Video of yesterday’s gathering in Haft Tir Square was posted on Facebook following the government’s decision to restrict foreign media. The rally followed a June 15 protest that was the largest anti-government demonstration since the Islamic revolution ousted Iran’s shah in 1979, triggered by opposition accusations of vote-rigging.

According to elections officials, Ahmadinejad won about 63 percent of the June 12 vote, to about 34 percent for Mousavi and the rest to two other candidates.

22.  George Galloway ; You can count on the fact election was fair
Don't they arrest "foreign jounalists" for being spys if they ask to many questions or stray into harms way ?
Freedom of repress is the order of the day in most countries around the world.

snip

Although the western media largely did the usual thing - not straying far from their five-star hotels, talking to those who would happily talk to them and especially if they spoke English - it's clear they mistook the plusher parts of the capital for the country at large. Mahmoud Ahmadinejad commands the loyalty of the poor, the working class and the rural voters whose development he has championed.

He lives like them, looks like them - he's never worn a suit since becoming president - and there's more of them than the English speaking more liberal elites now on the streets demonstrating.

It will soon fizzle out.

This election almost mirrors the class composition of the recent polls in Venezuela. President Hugo Chavez has exactly the same friends in his country. And the same enemies.

I've said many times that Ahmadinejad's comments about the Holocaust are a disgrace. His rhetoric can be ugly and he does not play well in Peoria, the mid-west weather vane here in the US where I am at present.

But he is the president of an important country and we'll just have to accept it.

The only way they can stop this is with many many tanks. Even the Iranian leadership may not have the stomach to do that. I think the people are going to win this battle.
