Suspected cat killer makes bail
Source: CNN

>>>>MIAMI, Florida (CNN) -- A judge in Miami allowed the supervised release of a man charged with 19 counts of animal cruelty Wednesday, saying a psychiatric evaluation showed he is competent and not a danger to himself or others.

Tyler Hayes Weinman, 18, also is charged with 19 counts of improper disposal of dead animals and four counts of burglary linked to a monthlong killing spree of pet cats in the Miami area, police said.

Weinman posted bond, but will be placed under house arrest and monitored with an electronic ankle bracelet, Miami-Dade County Circuit Court Judge John Thornton ordered. He is also required to undergo psychiatric counseling twice a week.
The judge set an arraignment date of July 6 for Weinman, who said nothing in court.

Weinman lives in Cutler Bay and has lived with his parents in Palmetto Bay, the two towns where police said 19 cats were mutilated and killed.
When asked while leaving the courtroom whether his son was guilty, father Douglas Weinman responded, "Absolutely not.">>>>

3. I wonder if the boy was a fan of Dexter?
The show is set in Florida, with horrific killings. I'm not saying the show made him do it (I am a fan of the show, somewhat reluctantly) but it seems like he might have been copying the modus operandi.

I remember twenty years ago when I was a student at the University of Hawaii. Numerous cat's tails were found hanging in trees--but no bodies were ever found nor were there cats without tails running around. The art department's cat was found alive but covered from head to tail with masking tape. The interior hallways tend to be open to the outside because of the climate, and the campus cats then had access to much of the building. There was talk that the culprit could be a custodian or maintenance person who was peeved at whatever extra work the cats might have brought. But to my knowledge they never figured it out.

4. this is terrible! And the father condones it! What a travesty. People will need
to keep their kitties indoors until something is done about this jerk.

23. Where does it say his father condones it?
His father said he was innocent. As far as we know that is true. Maybe there is a lot of evidence against this guy, but none of it was in that story. Unless you think being arrested is proof of guilt.

Or people will lynch him. I don't think "innocent until proven guilty" will be uppermost in their minds.

8. If convicted, Weinman could face up to 158 years in prison
Sounds like a plan to me. However, I don't like the idea of We the People paying for his life in prison.

How about they make him clean up animal shelters that they are planning to close for the rest of his damned life instead of a cushy prison sentence?

19. I hope they give him an electronic collar - with rhinestones is fine, just as long as it works

He should probably be worried about what cat owners want to do to him before worrying about what he might to do other cats.

21. For 96% of serial killers, torturing animals and setting fires are "gateway drugs."

As for house arrest, I'm concerned because he is not a minor and his parents have no legal sway over him.

How soon before he cuts his bracelet and escapes, like that Luster guy who taped himself raping drugged women? Would he have moved on to dead women if he hadn't been caught?

If my animal was killed I would strongly consider the $500 dollar charge for simple assault. Misdemeanor conviction vs laying an ass kicking on that little bitch.

33. Nice Lynch Mob
Folks, as a new poster (long -time reader) I hate to pick a fight with a whole bunch of people but I hope none of you ever serve on a jury. While your wishes of ill-will toward the person who did this are understandable, none of you know if this kid is guilty. If he is, I too hope they throw the book at him, but let's see some evidence before pronouncing someone a serial killer in waiting.
