Michigan's woeful labor markets took another steep dive during May, as the state's unemployment rate surged to 14.1%, a jump of 1.2 percentage points from the month before, state officials said today.

The monthly seasonally adjusted rate reported today is the highest recorded in the state since 14.2% in July 1983. It’s up from 12.9% in April and 8.2% a year ago.

The U.S. unemployment rate rose by half a percentage point in May to 9.4%.

“Major events continued to unfold in Michigan’s auto industry in May, which had a considerable impact on the state’s unemployment rate,” said Rick Waclawek, director of the state's Bureau of Labor Market Information and Strategic Initiatives.

3. Easily.
And 20% was the national number during the Great Depression.

1 out of 5 out of work.

My brother-in-law hasn't worked since he was laid off in September 09.

My friend and former co-worker hasn't found anything since 2007. He has a business degree.

He was a former Platform Director in Automotive. He and his 2 girls are living back home with Mom and Dad (Grandma and Grandpa).

He's in his early 50's - burned through his 401K and lives with Mom and Dad, now.

It's real, it's happening now, and it will have long lasting effects on our country.

7. Thank you.
And it isn't the only folks I know hurting.

And trust me, I'm not talking about folks who over-extended themselves and over-mortgaged, yadda, yadda.

It's just a lot of people here at ground zero (Detroit) are really screwed right now.

8. I see the same here in Cleveland....
These people (or at least the majority) aren't losing their homes due to sub-prime mortgages, etc.....but instead due to job loss with no jobs to replace them with.

I heard on the local news a few months ago that thousands upon thousands of people were waiting in line at Cedar Point handing in applications. The news anchor said that those jobs usually go to college and high school kids and they couldn't get over how many adults were applying. (Teachers, auto workers, IT workers, etc.) It's really, really bad.

11. Actually, at the peak, it was 24.9, but if you count unemployment the way they did then. . .

Michigan's would probably be over 25 percent.
