In Poll, Obama Is Seen as Ineffective on the Economy
Source: NY Times

A substantial majority of Americans say President Obama has not developed a strategy to deal with the budget deficit, according to the latest New York Times/CBS News poll, which also found that support for his plans to overhaul health care, rescue the auto industry and close the prison at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, falls well below his job approval ratings.

A distinct gulf exists between Mr. Obama’s overall standing and how some of his key initiatives are viewed, with fewer than half of Americans saying they approve of how he has handled health care and the effort to save General Motors and Chrysler. A majority of people said his policies have had either no effect yet on improving the economy or had made it worse, underscoring how his political strength still rests on faith in his leadership rather than concrete results.

As Mr. Obama finishes his fifth month in office and assumes greater ownership of the problems he inherited, Americans are alarmed by the hundreds of billions of dollars that have been doled out to boost the economy. A majority said the government should instead focus on reducing the federal deficit.

But with a job approval rating of 63 percent, Mr. Obama has the backing of Democrats and independents alike, a standing that many presidents would envy and try to use to build support for their policies. His rating has fallen to 23 percent among Republicans, from 44 percent in February, a sign that bridging the partisan divide may remain an unaccomplished goal.

The headline and lede are more than a bit misleading. 57 to 35 approve of the job he's doing with the economy. The only real negative in the poll is 60 to 30 disapproval on dealing with the deficit.

1. The title is awesome. Who wrote it? Frankly, who cares?
Another incident from the NYT where what they say goes against the prevailing wisdom. Shocked!

2. All the GOP, media talk about is deficit, bailouts, without relative blame to Bush and before.
Much of it now to scuttle health care spending. What we can we do? Who can we pester?

We still need to spend to stimulate.

Notice media no longer really carries his speeches. They say over-exposed, but not the critical stuff. We just get written permission for a kid from a town hall, fly-swatting and pictures of greasy take out burgers.

Gawd, I'm sick of the MSM. They have betrayed the role the Constitution envisioned for them.

It easy to see how 57% = ineffective if it is printed in the New York Times.

I will simply say that the media has put enough RNC mouthpiece on television
to sway 35% of the population. Considering the nightmare that the economy was,
to believe that this President is "ineffective" on dealing with the economy
is Right Wing Talking Points, which obviously, The NYT is happy to repeat loudly
as a headline! (what would we think without them?)

Wish we'd seen the same number of Democrats handed a microphone 5 months into Bush's term,
but I didn't see them or hear them, and I was looking for them.

Sucks to be a Democrat sometimes....due to the unequal treatment one gets from
the fucked up media.

I wrote to the author, basically saying what I've said here.

8. It's the Disney mentality. Poor, stupid MoFos.
My heart bleeds for those who had no chance of an education, but the excuses of those who did leave me cold and empty.

Are we to believe the ONLY thing that's being taught in the private schools and universities is GREED?

10. 1. The deficit is Bush's fault. 2. Obama is doing nothing to fix it.
Yes, Bush is far more culpable;however,Obam has done very little other than help the banks--which are as guilty as Bush of causing the crisis.

11. I wonder what his approval rating would be if he'd taken Krugman's, et al advice?
Dumped Geithner, nationalized the banks, told all the Credit Default Swap gamblers, "thanks for playing, too bad about all that money you lost"...Wall St. would have convulsed with revenge, the stock market would taken an even bigger dump, and, at least in the short term, things would be a lot worse. Although I believe that's what he should have done, I'm sure his approval ratings would be in the toilet.

or building anything & Obama has not held the FED accountable for recklessly low interets rates.

13. So far the only ones to benefit from all WH actions are the rich banksters

and WH mandated job losses for the rank and file.

I guess we now are supposed to wait until the rich banksters trickle down their ill gotten gains they received from the taxpayer coffers. Green shoots for the banksters and trickle downs for the rest of us.

He isn't doing a good job with the deficit because no one can. He hasn't learned how to part the red sea, turn water into wine or walk on water yet either. :P

18. I don't like the fact
that Obama is giving so much power to the Federal Reserve which is not 'federal' at all. This, to me, is just giving TPTB exactly what they want. The Fed will continue to rob the people.

All of these 'too big too fail banks' need to broken up just like they broke up AT&T back in the '80's.

These banks are cartels. Why isn't anyone suggesting to bring back 'Glass Stegall?'

We're fucked beyond all comprehension. Wait till the next shoe drops....commercial real estate and the derivatives. The dollar will be devalued. Again, WASF and most Americans don't have a clue as to why.

You ain't seen nothing yet. Get prepared.
