Afghanistan: Coalition troops launch massive assault on Taliban
Source: CNN

KABUL, Afghanistan (CNN) -- Coalition troops launched a massive assault on a Taliban stronghold in southern Afghanistan and were able to push militants out of some areas they had controlled, they said Coalition said in a statement.

About 500 troops were involved in the operation, the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force announced Tuesday.

Coalition used more than 25 aircraft to drop hundreds of troops into the area at about midnight June 19.

The troops, mostly from the United States and Britain, were able to secure three main crossing points in the area and will work to create checkpoints in an effort to stifle the movement of insurgents, the military release said.

This is poorly and apparently hastily written.

I'll replace it with a better article if I can find one.

and wish Obama would keep his promise to end them.

7. killing is killing no matter what country you happen to be in
the 'war' in Afghanistan will not go well.

Incidentally, he hasn't even bothered to keep the Iraq promise.

8. He promised a "phased withdrawal" in Iraq.
From what I understand, that is what is going on now, troop levels are being decreased.

He specifically said during the campaign that he would redeploy troops to Afghanistan, so no-one should be surprised to see that happening now.

I fully agree with you that the war in Afghanistan will not go well. None of them ever have, no reason to think that ours will be any different.

4. I am not trying to argue just curious...
I understand the arguement against Iraq...But Afghanistan is a completely different issue. Had Bush not left and gone into Iraq this would be different.

Should we allow Afghanistan to be a failed state? Do you think this is smart?

6. Afghanistan is not called the "Graveyard of Empire" for nothing
so yeah, I think it's foolish for us to continue to try and 'liberate' them.

9. You ask:
Should we allow Afghanistan to be a failed state?

Afghanistan has been a failed state for (literally) hundreds of years. What makes you think the U.S. can do anything to prevent Afghanistan from being what is has always been?

And do you really think that more U.S. bombs and guns, and more destroyed villages, and more death and destruction, will turn it into a successful nation?

How much time and money do you want to spend before withdrawing?

The only thing that makes Afghanistan of any interest to al Qaeda at this point is the opportunity it presents to engage in jihad against the Great Satan.

Obama's commitment to escalate this war was dumb during the elction, and it is even dumber now to be following through on it.

No good will come from this war. It may well end up politically doing in Obama.

11. You may well end up being correct...
However, I think our presence in Afghanistan is important considering what happened on 9/11. I do not think 9/11 was inside job nor do I think this is some NWO crap. So, the dangers are real if we allow it to return to pre 9/11 status.

I think if handled correctly much good can come out this.

How much time and $$$ do we spend is a very good question and I will admit this answer is up in the air...However, I think we will know within the next 6-12 months if it really is worth of remaining in Afghanistan.

So, we will have to agree to disagree.

I do respect your opinion at the same time I do HOPE you are wrong.

10. The tragic thing is...
Obama is doing their bidding.

His unwise promise to escalate the war during the campaign was mostly intended to show he wasn't soft on all war. (God forbid!)

His decision to follow-through on this promise post-election is a tragic error that poltiically weakens his administration.

He needs to declare victory and get out; and the sooner the better.
