NKorea warning hints short to medium-range launch

WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. intelligence officials say an impending missile test threatened by North Korea is expected to launch short and medium-range missiles rather than a long-range missile similar to one tested in April.

A U.S. counterproliferation official confirms that North Korea has issued a warning to mariners of upcoming launches. The exclusion zone cited in the warning is an area 450km by 110km off the coast of Wonsan, North Korea, from June 25 to July 10 for a 12-hour period each day.

U.S. defense and counterproliferation officials say intelligence suggests that short- and medium-range missiles will be launched. Officials speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive reports say U.S. intelligence has not seen preparations for a long-range Taopodong-2 rocket launch.
