Gov. Mark Sanford’s mistress is a 43-year-old divorced mother who works for an agricultural company, a Buenos Aires newspaper reported today.

La Nacion identified Sanford’s lover as Maria Belen Chapur, a mother of two who lives in the fashionable district of Palermo.

After six days of speculation about his whereabouts, Sanford emerged Wednesday and confessed to having a year-long affair with a woman he met in Argentina eight years ago. Sanford did not identify the woman but told reporters she had two children.

Media crews are reportedly camped outside her apartment, but Chapur has yet to speak with reporters.

Several media outlets reported that Chapur works for Bunge y Born, a multi-national agribusiness with deep roots in Argentina. Bunge y Borne is now known as Bunge Limited, based in White Plains, N.Y.

History

A global company with European roots that date back to its founding in Amsterdam in 1818. European immigrants arriving in Argentina in the late 19th century took advantage of the newly created wheatlands. Two families joined forces to play a large role in the grain and oilseed business, initially in Argentina and then worldwide. The owning families expanded their business into industry in Argentina and Brazil, including textiles, paint, chemicals, fertilizer, banking and insurance. Throughout the early and mid-20th century they continued to be successful. In 1974, two third-generation family members, Jorge and Juan Born, were kidnapped by the Montoneros guerrilla group and recovered only after the payment of a $60m ransom.

The families became even more low profile. In 1989, Jorge Born, president of the company from 1987 (replacing the "business genius" Mario Hirsch), began working closely with the government of Carlos Menem. Bunge provided the government with its first two economy ministers. This intervention in politics upset the other shareholders and together with the company's lacklustre business performance, Born was ousted in 1991 and replaced by Octavio Caraballo.

The prior unity between the shareholders disintegrated as Caraballo struggled to modernize the company. Bizarrely the ousted Jorge Born has started working with one of his former kidnappers, Rodolfo Galimberti.

In 1994 the Bermuda-registered Bunge International was created as the main company in which the families had shares. There were around 180 shareholders – the main families were Hirsch, Bunge, Born, Engels and De La Tour. This replaced the older structure in which individual shareholders had stakes in all the different Bunge companies. Now only in Argentina does the Bunge y Born name still exist.

In 2001, Bunge went public. Through their three businesses - agribusiness, fertilizer and food products - they have established a leading global presence in the farm-to-consumer food chain. Bunge is the world's largest oilseed processor, the world's number one seller of bottled vegetable oil to consumers and the largest producer and supplier of fertilizers to farmers in South America.

In 2008, Bunge acquired Walter Rau margarine company from German. During 2009 Raisio Group will sell its margarine business to Bunge Limited.

Read between the lines: Mistress is everything his wife is NOT and he had no choice but to leave for the arms of another woman - for emotional, intellectual and physical reasons..... and she is NOT a Blonde Bimbo (sorry for the phrasing).

Gut reaction... What the hell was she doing with Sanford? Cultured, professional, educated and beautiful, why Sanford? Something's missing in this story.

Carlos Soto, the owner of Guido's Bar, says he's seen Sanford and Maria Belen Chapur there several times over the last few months -- most recently last week.

Soto says they were "all over each other" last week in his bar, "kissing, holding hands and drinking wine."

Exactly my thought when I saw the picture. I assumed she was some airhead TV reporter then I read the story and she seems a lot more intelligent than him. But then she is with HIM, so WTF?

She is very pretty. I can understand why HE went off the deep end, with her working that Platte River Italian beauty thing.

Which is what the translation uses. Which is not the same at all. Conquered as in conquest is very different than seduced. To use the word seduce makes her out of be predatory and him out to be some innocent schmuck who didn't have a clue.

I didn't know "conquistar" can = seducir. I just read 'conquered the heart of' too. But I looked it up and tienes razon! But does to "seduce" make one predatory? I can't imagine HE seduced HER - after reading her background and seeing her photo.
