Manufacturing jobs up for fourth month

TEMPE, Ariz., Mar 01, 2004 (United Press International via COMTEX) -- U.S.
manufacturing employment is up for the fourth consecutive month after a 37-month
contraction, the Institute for Supply Management reported Monday.

The employment index rose to 56.3 in February, the highest since December 1987,
from 52.9 in January. New orders and production were also up.

The price managers index shows the manufacturing index grew in February for the
ninth straight month. February's PMI was 61.4 percent, down from January's score
of 63.6 percent. A reading above 50 percent indicates the manufacturing economy
is generally expanding, the institute said.

All 20 manufacturing industries reported growth.

The overall economy also grew for the 28th straight month, according to the
report.

In my neck of the woods, the only big employer coming to town is a Home Depot, and those jobs won't be manufacturing jobs.

That counts as manufacturing now.

Fewer Plants Working Slightly Harder With The Same Or Fewer People Makes the Index Higher.

This Is Spin.

This is typical for republican presidents. Republican presidents are always, always, always bad for job creation. Since the 1920's, the annual rate of job creation under republican presidents has always been lower than under democratic presidents.

Since the depression, not a single republican president has had a better rate of job creation than any democratic president. The highest rate of job growth under a republican was 2.2% per year during Nixon's time in office. The lowest rate of job growth under a democrat was 2.3% per year during Kennedy's time in office. Bush has had the first negative number since the depression.

Since WWII ended, a total of 57.51 million jobs were created during the terms of democratic presidents which is an average of 2.054 million jobs per year. During the terms of republican presidents a total of 31.11 million jobs were created which is an average of 1.003 million jobs per year.

You can not have cheap labor in a strong job market. Nothing is more republican than that.

(CBS) Manufacturing jobs making things like airplane engines, cars and farm equipment are disappearing from the American economy.

Or are they? According to a White House report, new manufacturing jobs might be as close as your nearest drive-thru.

The annual Economic Report of the President has already stirred controversy by suggesting the loss of U.S. jobs overseas might be beneficial, and predicting that a whopping 2.6 million jobs will be created in the country this year.

As first reported by The New York Times, the fast food issue is taken up on page 73 of the lengthy report in a special box headlined "What is manufacturing?"
