Sanford's wife: 'His career is not a concern of mine'
Source: CNN

(CNN) -- Jenny Sanford said Thursday that her husband Mark Sanford's political career is "not a concern of mine" and that she'd be just fine -- regardless of whether their marriage survives.

She would not speculate whether her husband would resign as South Carolina governor.

"His career is not a concern of mine," she told reporters as she departed the family's vacation home in Sullivan's Island, South Carolina. "He's going to have to worry about that. I'm worried about my family and the character of my children."

She added that she would be fine, with or without her husband.

85. Good for her for standing up for herself and not standing
one step left and one step behind Sanford. If more spouses took this line, instead of standing there like pitiful whipped dogs, then the scorn & shame would be borne rightly by the miscreants.

Resignation should be the standard, and politicians of all stripes should fall on their own professional swords and then get the hell out of public service.

11. I think she is trying to teach her 4 sons an important lesson
She needs her boys to know that their father messed up big time. That is what character is about. I know that the flesh is weak, but when the mind is weaker that indicates poor character. Its most troubling for the religious types who want to preach and not practice.

Jenny is a Sullivan, a member of the Sullivan family that founded the Skil Power Tools company. She's from a large Irish-Catholic family from Chicago, and went to Catholic schools, but Mark is the fundie hypocrite in the family. She's using HIS religion as a weapon, and doing it very effectively. She's not cold, she's hurt and pissed.

21. Thanks for that.
I looked up her original statement from Wednesday and my feelings about her have not changed. Now, perhaps she is right. She may have been the "best wife", her words, btw. But still an odd thing to actually say in a public statement. I understand being hurt and pissed. But she still gives me the feeling of a very cold person. We all have impressions we get from people, and that is mine. However, I do wish her and the boys well. She seems determined, that's for sure.

29. I'm not too sure about her
I didn't watch her comments but I did see footage of her coming out to give it. If I didn't know the story I would think she was a perfectly contented woman giving a press conference. She had the obvious pre-planned move to hand out her written statement to the press and she did it with fluid ease. There was no awkward moment feel about her. To me that says she's pissed off and going through pre-planned steps to destroy him. Most women would be devastated, and many would put her childrens' love of their father ahead of her anger.

No one forced her to make a statement. She sure as hell didn't have to make one, especially if it wasn't to support him. No one would have held it against her to remain silent. In my opinion she appears to have done it to put another nail in his coffin. As a woman I can admire that, but at the same time I can have misgiving about the reason she did it. Was she an abused woman? Did he run around being a philanderer with other women, or is this his only time and does it piss her off because he seems to be in love with the other woman? Did she hurt the boys she professes she has the right to teach about character with her actions? Anything she had to teach them she could have done in the privacy of her home without proclaiming it to the world. Does throwing their father under the bus in such a public way teach them about character?

35. And why would she not want to put another nail in the coffin? And why refrain from doing so?
She's known about the affair for weeks. She's had plenty of time to process it. I don't see why anyone would fault her for that. I think she's setting a great example for other political wives in this situation. Why on earth should they stand by their man after their marriage has been betrayed? Doesn't that only encourage the husband's behavior?

57. You say maybe, and I question her motives
Aren't we both doing the same thing essentially? He actions aren't all that transparent are they? Sure it's wonderful to see her swing the axe at him. It's a hoot, and women love to see it, especially women who have been used and abused by their husbands. But that doesn't mean that her motives are pure.

My husband used to beat me when my son was a baby and he was unfaithful. I left and never told my son about the beatings or the infidelity until he asked me pointedly. I never spoke ill of his father. When my son asked me, I told him the truth. I saw no reason to poison my son against his father or to drag him into the shit his father did. That's why I question her motive.

63. Here's an interesting article that throws more light on the subject.
Edited on Fri Jun-26-09 01:50 PM by dgibby
I'm thinking this might have been the last straw, so to speak. She'd kept quiet since learning of the affair in Jan, worked on reconciliation, given him another chance, then discovered that he was still seeing his mistress, and had planned a 10 day trip (over Father's Day) to be with her. He's lucky he's still breathing.

As for your situation, I applaud your restraint. You're a much better woman than I could ever hope to be. I also applaud you for getting your son and yourself out of an abusive relationship. That took courage.

The difference between your situation and Jenny Sanford's is, if I read you post correctly, the ages of the children involved. The Sanford children are all old enough to be aware of their father's indiscretions, so she's really not poisoning them against their father. She did not issue any statement until after he had made a total ass of himself and embarrassed her and the children on national tv.:hi:

Oops! I guess it would be helpful if I provided a link!

65. Thanks for the information. And I always did understand her
And I get a kick out of her actions too. There's something satisfying about seeing a philandering self-righteous ass hole get his just deserts. I wasn't trying to criticize or judge, in spite of being attacked by others here as disingenieus and 'noble' I was only questioning her motives. Sometimes blind rage can be just the ticket to set things right. Especially for women, but other time it can do more harm.

I'm definitely on Jenny's side, whether she's a Republican or a Democrat. As a woman I get her anger.

84. You have to admit that the Sanford situation is a lot different, though.
Edited on Sun Jun-28-09 09:27 AM by Nay
There's no way this can be shoved under the rug for the kids. It's all out in the open, right now, in all the papers and on TV. The kids are already dragged into the shit their father did. The only thing Jenny can do is make it all a pointed lesson for her kids -- that if someone treats them like dirt, their own sense of honor and decency should distance them from that person, even if it is a husband/father. Those boys will get a lesson in respect from their mother, and may be less likely to treat their future wives in such a manner. That's a good thing.

Now, as to Jenny's motives, I have no doubt she is out to destroy Sanford. What is refreshing is that she is destroying him with his own fundie bullshit, and doing a magnificent job of it. As far as her not seeming to be sufficiently distraught over the breakup of her marriage, well, I suspect her marriage may not have been so great. Remember, he's been mooning over Maria for about 8 years now. In that case, she may be quite happy that 1) it's finally all come to a head, 2) he has fucked himself over royally by being such a jerk AND even by violating state law when he abandoned his job, and 3)she gets to throw all that fundie crap in his face. Yes, she is planning this as if she were still on his election campaign -- but now she's unelecting him. Perfect. The message: don't fuck with me. I helped make you, and I can unmake you, despite all the "little woman" crap you believe.

I'm only questioning her motives to be so public about it. She has children who will be hurt that much more by her public humiliation of their father. I'm all for getting even, but there are other ways. She could just keep completely silent and still get even.

You know not everything is about extremes. I'm questioning her motives and you're just assuming I'm expecting her to go the the other extreme. That's not it at all and you could read that into my post easily.

At this point she's probably madder about where the kids fit into the apology.

30. smart and political
She is from money and knows politics(business wise and political wise). One of the advantages that wealth and white collar parents teach their children is how to act in stressful business and political situations. Blue collar kids learn through trial and error because their parents have no experience in those situations. My wife is white collar and I am blue collar and we discuss this all the time.

Jenny knows exactly what she is doing.

36. Sanford is a fool.
As I have said, he appears to be the only person in the state who doesn't know not to trifle with Jenny.

I think the reason he came back into the middle of such a mess was because of the kids. I'll bet her first move was to tell him if he ever wanted much access to them, he better break off the romance. If she read those emails, she knew he was head over heels. She made him break his own heart.

If it wasn't for the kids, he probably would have been thrown out long ago. He would have disappeared into the Pampas. Now he is humiliated and has nobody to love. Boo effing hoo!!

41. We are cheering for a woman who is handling a philandering husband
in a way we admire and respect. I don't care which side of the political fence she is on over this issue -- her husband's cheating is HER business, and she can handle it anyway she wants. If she wants to publicly hand him his balls, I'm good with that. If she wants to pull a Tammy Wynette, I'm good with that, too.

Personally, I admire the way she's handling things -- and I don't care whether or not she a Repub. Heck, I'd vote for her in a heartbeat! (Except for the whole 'live in another state, don't want to vote Repuke' thing.) :)

46. There are Democrats
who have $ and share it. And there are Democrats who are selfish. And because her grandfather developed a company, she is, therefore, a miserly republican. We know nothing about her actually. But I like the way she handled herself in this instance.

She certainly isn't behaving like the wife of Vitter who paid to be diapered so he could shit himself. And, yes, he's still a United States Senator.

86. the more I read about this family...the more it sounds like Jenny was his
mother...not his wife.... a grown man does not ask permission to see his mistress from his "wife".....their relationship dynamic was twisted. (IMO)
