U.S. says Zelaya is the only president of Honduras
Source: Reuters

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Obama administration recognizes ousted President Manuel Zelaya as the only constitutional president of Honduras, a senior administration official said on Sunday.

"We recognize Zelaya as the duly elected and constitutional president of Honduras. We see no other," the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told reporters in a conference call organized by the U.S. State Department.

A second official on the same conference call stressed that the United States strongly backed efforts by the Organization of American States to forge a resolution condemning a coup d'etat ousting Zelaya on Sunday and calling for him to be reinstated.

"This is not a process that should be interfered with bilaterally by any country in the Americas," said the second official.

"Ultimately the answer is going to arise from a resolution of the political tensions that led us to this moment."

The two officials also reiterated earlier U.S. statements that condemned the Honduran military's takeover and called for a return to the democratic rule of law and a peaceful resolution of the crisis through dialogue

12. US Condemns Coup in Honduras, Rejects Interim President

Posted by Kristin Bricker - June 28, 2009 at 4:06 pm

"The only president the United States recognizes is President Manuel Zelaya."

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton condemned the coup in Honduras in the following statement:

The action taken against Honduran President Mel Zelaya violates the precepts of the Inter-American Democratic Charter, and thus should be condemned by all. We call on all parties in Honduras to respect the constitutional order and the rule of law, to reaffirm their democratic vocation, and to commit themselves to resolve political disputes peacefully and through dialogue. Honduras must embrace the very principles of democracy we reaffirmed at the OAS meeting it hosted less than one month ago.
US Ambassador to Honduras Hugo Llorens said in a press conference from the US Embassy today, "The only president the United States recognizes is President Manuel Zelaya."

Lloren's statement is particularly significant because it means that the US refuses to recognize the man Congress has sworn in as Honduras' interim president, Roberto Micheletti. Micheletti was the President of Congress before being sworn in as interim President.

US President Barack Obama has expressed his "deep concern" over the crisis in Honduras.

18. UPDATE 6:54PM OAS HAS JUST CONDEMNED COUP IN HONDURAS, CALLS FOR ZELAYA'S REINSTATEMENT

In a major blow to the coup leaders in Honduras who just illegally installed themselves in power, the Organization of American States (OAS) has just issued a resolution condemning the coup against President Zelaya, demanding the return of Zelaya to power immediately and clarifying that the OAS will not recognize any other government other than Zelaya's in Honduras. Whew! For a minute there I thought this was going to turn out like Haiti in 2004 when coup forces kidnapped President Aristide and forced him into exile and, while the OAS "condemned" the constitutional rupture, they never called for Aristide's reinstatement, and since the US backed the coup, an illegal transitional government was installed and nothing more came of it from the international community.

This time, things seem different. Still waiting on the US Government's official position...If they say they will not recognize the coup government, then we have to see how things will play out in Honduras.

no expectation should be had that it would be any different now. If anything, the Honduran resistance should be allowed to deal the mighty blows against the enemy and its clandestine foreign backers.

32. Certainly not
Edited on Mon Jun-29-09 12:18 AM by Alamuti Lotus
My remarks were countering the claim that the current 'business as usual' admin is standing up to the military coup. What I suggest is that words are often intended to direct attention away from real tangible actions--which have a long bi-partisan tradition of wrongdoing in the area in general and Honduras in particular. But, apparently being aware of these facts makes me an anti-American Stalinist St Hugo worshipper etc etc etc... This is the problem when stupid people think they're being really, really clever.

34. Please tell me one time in 110 years of US
dicking around in Latin America has the US ever opposed a right-wing coup or counter-revolution on behalf the people of that region. You can't. US condemnation of the coup and recognition of the real Honduran president is an unbelievabe shift away from US support for the oligarchical land owners that have traditionally run Central America.

EU demands Honduran president's release

June 28 2009 at 06:42PM

Corfu, Greece - The European Union on Sunday called on the Honduran military to release President Manuel Zelaya and restore constitutional order.

"The EU strongly condemns the arrest of the constitutional president of the Republic of Honduras by the armed forces," Czech Republic Foreign Minister Jan Kohout told reporters on the sidelines of an international meeting here.

"This action is an unacceptable violation of constitutional order in Honduras," said Kohout, whose country holds the rotating EU presidency.

"The EU calls for the urgent release of the president and a swift return to constitutional normality."
