Sanford: I will not resign from office
Source: MSNBC

From NBC's Mark Potter
In an interview with NBC News this morning, Gov. Mark Sanford (R) said categorically he will not resign as governor of South Carolina.

He said he intends to spend the last 18 months of his term improving his approach to proposing legislation.

He says he has consulted with a number of friends and spiritual advisers. All encouraged him to stay in office, which he says now he will do.

1. It rarely fails to impress how when Republicans consult spiritual advisors
they usually fail to do the right thing.

Oh well, bring on the circus!

39. force him out -get a petition or it'll get worse, why didn't Spitzer refuse?
1 sided power is where we're at now & it's the wrong side, I consider them maladroit.

44. Spitzer didn't have a choice...
...he was facing potential criminal charges, and the Republican State Senate (for reasons having to do with the 2008 election) would have impeached him.

32. That's Republican spirituality!
You might think that, in this context, if spirituality has any meaning it's about what's best for the people you serve. But no: Republican spirituality is about what's best for yourself. Hence the uncanny fact that their god always seems to tell them to do exactly what they already wanted to do.

3. Of course not, that is only required of Democrats caught with their pants down
and their hands in the cookie jar.

What makes this sick, is this asshole called for Clinton to resign over a simple blow job while he was using state resources to dip is wick.

4. Well Then It's Time For The People Of South Carolina To Speak.....
he was completely irresponsible in his actions regarding leaving the state without proper chain of command and he did use taxpayers money. I don't care about his dalliances - he should resign or be impeached because he acted totally irresponsible.

5. I don't think he should resign because of his girlfriend. He should resign
because he failed to perform his duties as a Governor of a State! TS he doesn't LIKE his Lt. Gov. A quick call to the Lt. Gov. office, turning over responsibilities to him, and simply saying "Im taking a few days off and my be unreachable." would have sufficed. Instead he created havoc by just disappearing!

If ANY employee of any corporation or institution would have done that...they'd be GONE!

11. Oh goody
Another example of Republican family values--cheat on your wife, lie about it, steal money from your state, and then cling to power.

At least it doesn't give another Republican a chance to take over the governorship and do a better job, thereby making HIM "presidential timber".

18. presidential timber ..................
If so-called serious journalists can ask Gingrich, in all seriousness, about running for the presidency in 2012, without a preamble which includes something along the lines of "in light of your abandonment of family values, adultery, lying to everyone - urging others who have committed similar sins to QUIT (I think you get my drift, people)", then Sanford is a typical shoo-in as far as the republicans are concerned.

23. But should he be proposing when he's already married? Oh, legislation!
Hmm, maybe he would do better to improve his approach to vetoing legislation. ;-)

And his trail hiking could take a bit of touch up, too. First rule of trail hiking: don't board a plane to Argentina.

As for his 'spiritual advisers,' did any of them encourage him using a pitchfork?

Well, look at it this way: every day he doesn't resign is a gift to SC Democrats.

31. Any governor that sneaks out, lies, and goes AWOL and doesn't
tell anyone where he is, or leave anyone in charge, is an incompetent, irresponsible fool.

A real leader would resign.

Politically speaking, having a mistress is the least of his character flaws.

all went on in Argentina with the cover story?

The Argentina Stimulus Package that substituted for the US Federal Government Stimulus from the Obama admin makes him the latest gop hypocrite to splash the front pages this century.

36. We'll see how this plays out.....
This may be his current plan but if public opinion in S.C. swings strongly against him he will be singing a different song. Personally I think the best thing for him and his family would be to step down.

He can hardly continue as an effective chief executive at a time when S.C. has one of the highest unemployment and foreclosure rates, etc. The people of S.C. deserve an executive that can be focused on their best interests.

Mark, "Can't Keep My Willy Contained" Sanford, should be concerned about his wife and children. That should be his first priority. But the state deserves someone who places them first as well.

Remember Nixon's famous statement "I am not a crook". It wasn't that much later he resigned in disgrace.
