Associated PressPYONGYANG, North Korea (AP) — North Korean leader Kim Jong Il made a rare public appearance as the communist nation paid solemn respects Wednesday to his father, the country's late founder, on the 15th anniversary of his death.
Broadcaster APTN showed footage of North Koreans laying flowers and bowing repeatedly before a huge statue of Kim Il Sung amid somber music outside the hilltop Mansudae Assembly Hall in the capital.
"The great leader, President Kim Il Sung, is always alive — not only in the hearts of our people, but also in the minds of people all over the world," said Hwang In San, a Pyongyang resident.
Kim Jong Il appeared at a memorial ceremony at a Pyongyang auditorium attended by hundreds of military officers and senior government officials, footage showed.
