SEOUL (Reuters) - North Korean leader Kim Jong-il has pancreatic cancer and the illness is life-threatening, South Korean broadcaster YTN said on Monday based on information gathered by Chinese and South Korean intelligence sources.

Kim's health is one of the most closely guarded secrets in the reclusive communist state. Kim, 67, was widely thought to have suffered a stroke last year, but there has never been official confirmation.

Kim looked gaunt during a public appearance last Wednesday at a memorial for his father and state founder Kim Il-sung. Kim's health raises questions about succession in Asia's only communist dynasty and who will control its nuclear weapons programs.

The North conducted its second nuclear test on May 25, which was met by U.N. sanctions aimed at cutting off the impoverished state's lucrative arms trade and one of its few sources of hard cash. South Korean officials have said the North's recent military grandstanding that also included missiles launches and threats to attack the South is linked to efforts to pave the way for Kim's youngest son to take over.

I understand where you're aiming, but seriously. I would not wish that shit on ANYBODY.

A friends wife died at age 29 from pancreatic cancer, less than 6 months after diagnosis.

And I have a friend who's actually a survivor of pancreatic cancer - had the Whipple procedure done, and was in the hospital for almost a month.

Maybe Korea can be re-united finally, like Germany.

Usually not diagnosed early enough to do any good. This may sound gross, but an early sign is consistently "floating" stools. My FIL passed two years ago from it. Isn't Patrick Swayze fighting it also?

It's already looking like the guy's quite a piece of work, and he's younger than I am; he'll be in power for decades unless something happens.

I've lost an uncle, a grandfather, and my daughter's ballet coach to this condition, and of course we all know Andy's story here. Yes his surgery was delayed, but it was a long shot even under ideal conditions. The reality is this is almost always a death sentence.

No tears shed for the Korean despot, but I do wish they'd devote more resources to finding cures or treatments for this terrible condition.

diagnosis. Probably sheer luck, but I wonder how he's being treated - the details. Or maybe he just gets intensive medical attention & it was caught early. The advantage of being a dictator. Children are dying, I'm certain, of easily treated cancers in N. Korea. Not to mention starvation.

I wondered why they seemed so sure they were going to be attacked or invaded. Now I know.

It would be ironic if the only place that had a treatment for him was in the US.

But I can't say I'm all that broke up about it. Kim Jong Il has starved millions of his people and just needs to go away one way or another.

That progresses very quickly and very painfully. I hope his last days are painful and full of suffering, and then he goes straight to Hell.

Fitting justice as pancreatic cancer might be to Kim Jong-il, I hope him a speedy DEATH so that he can do no more damage to the world.

Forget the pseudo-progressive airs of Marxism, this man is really an absolute monarch wielding despotic powers. This man is more Ivan the Terrible than Leonid Brezhnev.

But what if his youngest son is even worse and delusional than he is. His successor will be a young power mad fool with a nuke.
