Canada's Grand Old Party Shows Signs Of Decay - Taipei Times
Just thought I'd put this in as part two of an ongoing series of bizarre far-flung coverage.

Beset by scandals and torn by controversy over the legalization of gay marriage, the once-powerful Liberal Party of Canada is starting to look increasingly vulnerable

"Those Liberals, they're nothing but a bunch of crooks."

Floyd Salmon, Canadian store owner

In the back of Greenbush General Store, in the heart of a tiny village an hour south of Canada's capital Ottawa, the locals get together twice a day to chew the fat over coffee and the odd cigarette.

What they are talking about should be enough to make Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin and the local member of parliament, Joe Jordan, gag on their own coffee as they mull the next election, likely this year.

"Those Liberals, they're nothing but a bunch of crooks," came the opening volley from store owner Floyd Salmon.

Martin is eager to seek his own mandate as prime minister as soon as possible. He was elected in 1993, 1997 and 2000 as part of prime minister Jean Chretien's team, but he had his own ambitions and forced Chretien to step down in December after seizing control of the Liberal Party the month before.

Martin has done his best to portray himself as an honest agent of change, despite having served as Chretien's finance minister and most powerful cabinet member for eight-and-a-half years.

1. Yeah, the Liberals are going down
Hopefully the NDP will pick up enough seats so that the Conservatives don't gain power.

2. Maybe. Canada has a tradition of crushing incumbent governments.
1958, 1962, 1984, 1993.

But, who knows.

3. I don't like Paul Martin
He comes across to me as a Tony Blair style politician.

4. He is trying too hard to come across as a nice guy.
Canadians seem to prefer aloof bastards as Prime Minister. The only two other 'nice' guys I can think of, Joe Clark and Lester Pearson were unable to form majority governments.

5. The Libs will hold on
and have a minority government. The Cons'll make up the opposition, which is why PM PM is moving slowly to the right (well, that and he's further right the JC was). Even with their recent polling success, I can't realistically see the NDP getting more than 15 seats or so. They'll pick some up in Ont and BC, maybe even Alta(!). Then the fun begins-will the Libs court them to form a coalition? Layton has already said that a consideration of proportional representation is his and the NDP's condition for a coalition. Or will the Libs decide to push further right in order to poach some of the red Tories left behind?
