Florida town fires manager after learning he's married to porn star

FORT MYERS BEACH, Fla. — A South Florida town manager who married a porn star last year was fired at an emergency meeting after the mayor and council members learned about it.

Fort Myers Beach town council voted 5-0 to fire Scott Janke "without cause" after Mayor Larry Kiker called the Tuesday night meeting.

... Kiker acknowledged that Janke had violated no rules or laws and added that he had done a good job for the town. But the mayor was concerned whether Janke could remain effective at his position.

... Janke wouldn't say whether he's considering legal action against the town. He said it's too early to think about what's next in his career, but he's concerned the firing might affect job opportunities.

Texans in a similar town (e.g. Rockport, Brazosport, etc) would take more of a "shucks, what a lucky guy, she must know a lot in the bedroom" approach. Naples (where I lived) and Ft. Myers (where I have family) are their own version of ultrareligious. Texas has separatist cults, that's true, but SW Florida's got Ave Maria, here: http://www.avemariablvd.com/ , much less a live-and-let-live movement.

Not subject to any civil service rules or protections. He can be fired at any time by a majority vote of the council members. They do not need to specify a reason for his dismissal. In fact, if they are smart they will not specify such a reason. To the extent that the mayor blabbed about it as much as he did, this particular city council may have just stepped on their collective johnsons big time. They have left Mr Janke an opening to sue them.

At the same time, it's my experience in working for and observing many city managers over the years that being fired is no deterrent to being hired for another position in the city manager bidness.

I would think that type of position would involve a contract.
