AFP BAQUBA, Iraq (AFP)--The Iraqi army Tuesday took control of Camp Ashraf, the main base for Iran's main armed opposition in exile, an Iraqi military source in the northern province of Diyala told AFP.
"After the failure of negotiations with the (People's) Mujahedeen to enter peacefully, the Iraqi army entered Camp Ashraf with force and it now controls all of the interior and all entrances to the camp," the source said.
"There were no injuries, only shouts and insults from the camp's residents."
Camp Ashraf is in Diyala province, north of Baghdad, and is home to about 3, 000 people, according to the Iraqi government.
The People's Mujahedeen, which has been based in Iraq for more than two decades, said in a statement that at 3.00 pm (1200 GMT), "the Iraqi police force started (an) attack on Ashraf by firing pepper gas."
