Hawaii coach suspended 30 days over gay slur

HONOLULU - Hawaii coach Greg McMackin was suspended for 30 days without pay and has volunteered to take an additional 7 percent pay cut from his $1.1 million salary for making a derogatory comment while describing Notre Dame’s chant before last year’s Hawaii Bowl.

In a room full of players, assistant coaches and boosters, a tearful McMackin addressed reporters late Friday after meeting with school officials for several hours.

“I just want to say I made a big mistake. I want to apologize to everyone and anyone that I offended with my remarks,” he said. “I’m committed to do whatever I can to use this as a life lesson to learn from my mistake. When we make mistakes, we have to learn from it and make better people of ourselves.”

In total, McMackin will lose roughly $169,000 from his salary this year. But the real damage seems to be to his reputation and to the university.

I can never figure out why these high profile people have yet to learn not to utter this crap. They ought to take the $169,000 and let a Gay rights organization donate it to the charity of their choice.

2. Football wise, Hawaii is a mid major in a 2nd tier conference

And still the coach makes (I won't say "earns") 1.1 million bucks a year?

I'm not sure what is more outrageous, his dumbass remark, or the fact that a university is willing to pay him that kind of dough.

No wonder we're so fucked up in the US of A.

BTW, to the U. for docking his pay.

On edit: Yes I know Boise State beat Oklahoma in a bowl game a couple of years ago. Overall the new WAC is a shadow of the old WAC (now the Mountain West).

5. the football coach at my alma mater, Indiana University,
made $2 million a year while I was there. For a football team that consistently ranked 13th in the Big 12 Conference (I'm not joking). The clown was getting paid the salary equivalent of 15 world class professors at the university. What a disgrace American higher education is. Anyone remember the Oklahoma coach who famously said he wanted U of Okla to be a university the football team could be proud of?
