Alberta raises the bar for use of Tasers
Source: Canwest News Service

Police in Alberta will be restricted to using Tasers only when there is a "real likelihood of injury" to an officer, a person being arrested or a bystander, say new regulations released Friday by the province's solicitor general.

The rules bring Alberta into line with what has recently been proposed for police forces in British Columbia following the death of Polish immigrant Robert Dziekanski.

Past regulations in Alberta allowed officers to pull the trigger simply when they were faced with "actual or threatened resistance to lawful arrest," when the subject was being an "active resister."

"These new guidelines strike the right balance between officer safety, police accountability and public safety," Solicitor General Fred Lindsay said in a news release.

1. This was the original reason...
that tazers were put into use in the first place! Tazzers were suppose to only be used in cases where cops would have normally had been forced to shoot someone...Not on elderly women and children as they have done lately. However, the passive public just sits back and says nothing or defends the cops on almost every issue like many did here on DU after the gates arrest. We the people are allowing law enforcement in the US rule over us like they do in Iran so I guess we deserve it?

12. i got to disagree with you, the taser is not a replacement for lethal force
there is a misconception that tasers are meant to be deployed instead of firearms and this is simply not the way LEO's operate. the taser is used instead of me going hands on with you or using my baton, if you have a weapon then i go to my handgun.

2. I wonder how long it'll take
For the Becks, Hannitys, O'Reillys and so on to complain about how evil and mean the Alberta government is to be doing this.

3. Good. In the US, a police officer can tase an unarmed person for sitting in a car...

...and refusing to get out.

In other words, whenever the police orders an unarmed person to do something and the person says no.

11. Based on arguments I've read here, I'm tempted to say, WTF?
Instead though I'll say, how sensible. I'm sick to death of hearing about paralyzed or ill people being tased three times before they are sufficiently "subdued" or how it's a stark choice between either tasers or guns.
