Suspect in gay sailor's death commits suicide

Source: CNN

(CNN) -- A sailor accused of killing another sailor was found dead in his cell in a southern California military jail, officials said Friday.

Petty Officer Jonathan Campos was found dead in the brig at the Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton in San Diego, a military statement said.

The cause of death was self-inflicted asphyxiation, according to the statement.

Campos had been charged with murder in the June 30 shooting death of Seaman August Provost.

First the murder of a gay soldier, and now a suicide by the accused. How conveniently tidy now that no further testimony will be coming out.

1. Sounds like a hate crime to me
Edited on Sat Aug-01-09 08:07 AM by slackmaster
He hated himself, so he killed himself.

K&U for the lame editorialization.

12. He was up for a LOT of serious charges..........

......... Provost was killed while he was standing guard as a sentry for the Assault Craft Unit 5 compound at Camp Pendleton, officials said. Authorities also said Provost's body was set on fire at his guard post.

Provost's family believed that he was killed partly because of his sexual orientation.

However, a spokesman for Camp Pendleton, where the shooting took place, said there was no indication early in the investigation that the killing was a hate crime.

Along with the murder charge, Campos was facing charges of drug use, larceny, burglary, theft, arson and unlawful handling of a deceased individual.

2. Are you suggesting that Campos was killed by somebody to silence him?
"...conveniently tidy now that no further testimony will be coming out..."

:wow:

Do you really believe that?

3. Agree, and I'll eat just about any conspiracy you feed me
But this was just a coward who didn't want to face the consequences of his evil actions. Saved the taxpayers some money at least. I'm not for capital punishment but maybe we should give some criminals the option if that's how they want to confess.

4. And you are just guessing as well...
And wishing death upon people is a "conservative" meme.

6. I'm far from a conservative and I'm glad this asshat killed himself.
Like the other poster said, he's saved the taxpayers a lot of money. It's just a shame he didn't just kill himself before he killed his shipmate.

13. That's a real intelligent comment...
That's the Republican style of debate.

You were not accused of being a Republican, merely using their techniques.

P.s. I trump your 20 years with my 40 years.

5. Coward
It's not a conspiracy. It was just a cowardly bigot who didn't want to face his punishment.

7. Does anyone else think that the two might have been lovers and this---
Edited on Sat Aug-01-09 10:01 AM by Eryemil
---one killed the other out of fear of being found out and couldn't live with himself afterwards?
It's no unheard of and I doubt he would have felt guilty enough to commit suicide had he committed murder out of hatred.

He COULD have just been afraid of "justice" of course but I don't know...

10. I was wondering that myself
if that theory is true, he probably came from some ultra fundie background where your only recourse is to pray the gay away. Maybe he was filled with hatred for the guy who was making him feel his "true" urges, as well as feeling hatred for himself because of what he was. Or he could have just been some sick bigot. Either way, it really is a huge tragic incident that should have been avoided, and could have been avoided if the military dropped DADT in favor of openness and acceptance. If this incident doesn't get Obama and the pentagon off their asses, I don't know what will.

15. Interesting and plausible idea
If the murderer grew up fundamentalist (like I did) then it's certainly possible. Now, since he killed himself, we'll never know. But, that would have been the whole idea in the first place. Alas, what a tragedy...

18. That kind of scenario would show how DADT is a failure, and why it should be repealed.
Of course, Obama is just bigoted enough against GLBT folks to not do anything about DADT despite his promise to do so.

8. Inspirational
WONDERFUL.

Maybe all the rest of the gay bashers could kill themselves, and the world would be a better place,
