DJ axed after radio stunt reveals girl’s rape
Source: MSNBC/AP

SYDNEY - A popular Australian DJ was dumped as a judge on television's "Australian Idol" Monday as a national backlash continued over a radio stunt in which a teenage girl hooked up to a polygraph revealed that she had been raped.

Kyle Sandilands, co-host of a top-rated morning radio program, was also off the radio Monday and his station said the "Kyle and Jackie O Show" was on hold indefinitely.

On last Wednesday's 2Day FM breakfast program, a 14-year-old girl was hooked up to a lie detector and asked on air about her sexual history, at her mother's request.

When the girl revealed she had been raped when she was 12, Sandilands responded, "Is that the only experience you've had?"

His reaction raised an immediate furor that led to Sandilands issuing several apologies to the girl and to the public. Prime Minister Kevin Rudd said he was "distressed" at the way the girl had been treated, and New South Wales state government ordered an investigation into the girl's rape claim.

13. These throw-away non-sequitur responses are so stale
I see these kind of comments frequently on DU. Someone starts a thread following a tragic story about some current atrocity in the news, and there will be a number of responses according to the tried-and-true, tired template, "Sounds like something <choose name from approved list of hated conservatives> would do." Can we please stop following this boring script? Sorry to dump on you, but this kind of stuff is so frequent, and it really does get old and boring. OK, I'm ready to be kicked in the groin, and if someone just sucker-punched me like I just did to you, I would be probably respond angrily.

6. At least the Aussies take care of their dick heads and don't let
them spread their excrement any further when they cross the line. I wish we did that. If so, Rush/Sean/Billo and imitators would be long gone.

8. Hope they find the rapist
wonder if it will turn out to be a family member? Would that be why the child didn't say anything? Or was she just ashamed? She needs counseling, which I hope she gets soon.

20. Sounds like one of those "mothers who doubt their slut daughters" things.
The mother is seriously an evil person here.

9. I read the mother knew about the rape
Apparently the girl had to remind her mother of it after answering the question about sex. Something to the extend of: "I was raped two years ago, don't you remember?"

Sad.

11. It sounds like that was the question the entire stunt was designed for
I don't understand what the final straw was--was it that she revealed she was raped? Or was it that he followed up with a question about her other sexual history? Because the non-rape sexual history seems to be precisely what the moronic mother brought her child in for.

I wonder if somebody higher up the food chain than this DJ approved the sequence, which might have gone unnoticed if not for the shocking reveal of a rape, and now that higher up is covering his or her own rear end by blaming it all on the DJ?

19. He tried to salvage it which was stupid, his cohost did the right thing by ending it.
As soon as he recognized that the mother was trying to be the most evil person on the planet at that very moment, he should have ended it.

22. Rule One: Don't ask a question you don't know the answer to
If you're on the radio, the smart thing to do, especially when you're dealing with a child, is not to ask a question that you don't know the answer to, because as in this case it might turn ugly really fast.

18. The mother asked the daughter if she "had sex" with the knowledge that the daughter was raped.
The DJ didn't have control over the questions or anything. Stupid, yes, intentionally cruel, I don't think so.

17. The whole show was trash in general, but I don't fault the DJ, clearly the mother...
...wanted to trap her poor daughter. She wanted to see if her daughter was the slut that she imagined that she was, probably didn't even consider her rape in the past 'real' etc.

You could just *hear* the vile look on her mothers face as she asked "Have you had sex?"

Stupid DJ had it coming though for not screening these things beforehand, doing a pre-show Q&A, etc. I mean when you want sensational Jerry Springer like shit you want to at least know all parties involved are in on it.
