US Senate Democrats seek to extend cash for clunkers
Source: Reuters

WASHINGTON, Aug 3 (Reuters) - Senate Democratic leaders want to keep the popular "cash for clunkers" program running, and hope an agreement is soon reached on how to do it, a party source said on Monday.

The Senate could push to quickly pass the bill approved by the House of Representatives before it went on a month-long recess last week -- or pass its own bill before the Senate begins its month-long break on Friday, the source said.

The program allows consumers to get credit toward buying a new car if they turn in older, less fuel-efficient vehicles.

1. Mccain's against it.
he did however have no problem with voting to give Rumsfeld a hundred times what this cost everytime he came around to raise funds for Iraq.

2. I emailed my two senators to urge them to vote for it
They will, I am sure, but just in case there is a campaign to flood them with a NO vote..

3. It's working, that's why repugs are against it.
Here in MI, the tax rebate for movie production is working, bringing in jobs by the thousands. Repugs can't stand that it's working and want it stopped because it's "too spensive". What they really want is to blame a Dem governor for a bad economy.

4. "-- or pass its own bill..."
Huh?

If they pass their own bill, then they would need to reconcile the House version with theirs and then both chambers would have to vote on the final single bill - and the House has already fled the scene.

The only way to get this in place this week would be for the Senate to pass the House version. Period. Otherwise the program ceases.
