Plaxico Burris Indicted on Gun Charges
Source: CBS

Former New York Giants star Plaxico Burress was indicted by a grand jury on weapons charges after shooting himself in the thigh at a Manhattan night club last winter, prosecutors announced Monday.

The indictment charged the 31-year-old Burress with two counts of criminal possession of a weapon and one count of reckless endangerment, Manhattan District Attorney Robert Morgenthau said.

Burress' former teammate, Giants linebacker Antonio Pierce, was not indicted for his role in the incident.

"A grand jury applied the law to the facts of this case," Morgenthau said.

No one else is likely to face charges in the case, Morgenthau said. He said some of the others involved in the incident "showed first-degree bad judgement," but their actions didn't rise to the level of a crime.

Burress was at the Latin Quarter nightclub Nov. 29 when he shot himself in the thigh after a gun tucked in the waist of his track pants slipped down his leg and fired. Authorities say Pierce, who was with Burress at the club, drove his then-teammate to the hospital and took the gun to Burress' home in Totowa, N.J.

The gun was not licensed. No one called police to report the gunshot wound, as required by law - not the players, nor NFL officials, nor the hospital where Burress was treated.

He is a local boy (Virginia Beach) so it saddens me while at the same time pisses me off on the 'sheer fuckwittery' scale...If you're going to have a sidearm for personal use, learn basic safety and get it registered (and do NOT fucking handle it when you are drunk)...Plax is a multi-millionaire and for whatever reason couldn't or didn't care about learning how guns work...

7. Plaxico is a dumbass and probably deserves some jail time
Edited on Mon Aug-03-09 04:37 PM by RamboLiberal
But how in the hell is 3 1/2 years in jail going to make any of us safer? I rather see this jerk have to do community service talking to young males about not carrying guns illegally and trying to lessen the violence among this volatile group to stop the damn killing.

DA & Bloomberg are just out to make an example out of this fool!

And I'm not saying this because Plaxico is an ex-Steeler, I never was that big on him as a player.

Edited on Tue Aug-04-09 09:13 AM by michreject
Mistake #1

When I started to fall, instead of letting it fall, he grabbed for it.

Mistake #2

Carried it without a CCW.

Mistake #3.

12. Don't forget mistake #4
taking it to a night club, which is illegal in it's own right, but combining guns with alcohol is never a good idea.

17. Not necessarily
you can have a CCW and still be prohibited from carrying in certain areas. Bars especially (51% rule) do not allow concealed carry even with a proper license.

Also, even if you're legally allowed to carry in an area, doing so while imbibing alcohol is never a good idea.

He made numerous mistakes, hopefully he will at least provide a good example to someone else of what never to do.

18. How Many Mistakes Is He Allowed......
....before being prohibited from ever owning/carrying a firearm again? How much stupid, dangerous behavior does the 2nd Amendment excuse, in your opinion? Bonus points, as usual, for an honest response.....

19. I would say gross negligence
or any criminal activity carried out with a firearm would discredit one from future ownership.
