UN admits failures in Kenya camp

One of the world's largest refugee camps fails to meet even the most basic standards, the UN has admitted.

More than a quarter of a million Somalis are crowded into the Dadaab camp in eastern Kenya having fled fighting in their own country.

Chronic overcrowding makes it difficult to help those in need, officials say, and Kenya is resisting expansion calls.

The UN High Commissioner for Refugees, Antonio Guterres, is due to visit on Tuesday to discuss additional space.

As Somalis lined up for their daily ration of food, one resident, Mohamed Shukra Shukra, told the BBC: "The problem is no water... no hospital, no food, it's a problem."

3. How did W create this problem?
Curious to see how you make the connection. The area has been pretty hosed for a generation

4. Yeah africa had it's issues before bush
was even born, and will likely continue to have them for the foreseeable future. It's just an unfortunate continent.

I'd chalk this up to a UN failure to solve a problem created by political instability and deep seated tribal hatred.

5. Problem is they aren't really accountable to anyone
if they fail what changes? They keep getting their funding, no one loses his job, no nation is penalized.

In an environment of zero accountability an organization with even the best of intentions will likely fail (and I'm starting to doubt the whole "good intentions" thing).

6. It's a total mess and I'm convinced....
that helping people really isn't the goal. It's more like kickbacks and bribes for those that manage to worm their way in.

it's a career for some people, nothing more. Another way to line their pockets.

Which is why, if it's going to work at all, we need some oversight. Some way of removing people that are not merely parasitic but actively harmful to others.
