NYT The Secretary of Transportation and the Senate majority leader both expressed confidence Tuesday that the Senate would revive the “cash for clunkers” auto-purchase program, by voting to infuse it with another $2 billion, as the House did last week.
And the Senate Republican leader predicted that the Senate would, indeed, hold a vote, although he did not venture an opinion on the result.
The Senate is scheduled to go home on Friday and simply getting the bill to the floor before then requires a consensus. And if the bill is amended, it would effectively kill the program until Labor Day, since the House has already begun its August recess.
But Democratic leaders said it would pass.
“There obviously is a real pent-up demand in America,” the Transportation secretary, Ray LaHood, said. “People love to buy cars, and we’ve given them the incentive to do that. I think the last thing that any politician wants to do is cut off the opportunity for somebody who’s going to be able to get a rebate from the government to buy a new automobile.”

this effects tons of emissions not being spewed into the air, less risk of accidents from these clunkers with worsening vehicle condition, gas efficiency saving oil and $ for the owners, could raise $500 million in tax revenue for states, steel production, car production to increase, parts suppliers to make more parts, salespeople to make good money, advertisers, factory workers, and on and on...
