Sailor who killed self in brig was being watched

(Camp Pendleton, Calif.) Authorities say a Navy petty officer charged with murdering a Camp Pendleton sailor killed himself in a brig that was under video surveillance because he’d made two previous suicide attempts.

Jonathan Campos was on suicide watch when he apparently stuffed toilet paper in his mouth and suffocated Friday.

Pendleton spokeswoman Maj. Kristen Lasica-Khaner said Monday that a guard visually checked Campos every five minutes as Navy regulations require. However, there may have been a 36-minute gap between physical inspections.

The base is investigating.

Campos was charged with shooting Seaman August Provost on June 30. Family members questioned whether Provost was targeted because he was gay, but the Navy says it has found no evidence of a hate crime.

I'll bet they didn't "find" any.

And Matthew Sheppard was a robbery victim.

Perhaps the two had a tryst and then someone couldn't deal with it.... but I'm guessing. Yet this happens, y'know. But we must exhaust all other possibilities 1st before entertaining such "outrageous" explanations.

3. This is plausible
Most prisoners on watch who do further attempts are thwarted, but some do succeed. I have heard of just about every conceivable method attempted. He likely had little more at his disposal than some toilet paper and a paper gown.

9. yup, its almost impossible to stop someone whos committed and makes multiple attempts
we can only put you in a restraint chair for so long, restrict your use of paper and plastic, but in the end the real serious inmates always find a way...

6. Suicide Watch
He'd already made two attempts, according to the article, so they put him under surveillance to catch him if he tried again.

Oops.

8. 3 "inmates" at Gitmo committed 'suicide' within minutes of each other, several years ago.
They were being physically "watched". How sad that someone would be so desperate to die that they would use toilet paper. What horror.
