5 U.S. Marines Killed in Afghanistan
Source: New York Times

KABUL, Afghanistan — Five American marines died Thursday, four of them in a single strike by a roadside bomb, making it one of the bloodiest single attacks against American servicemen in recent weeks.

The four marines were killed in a vehicle near Herat in the western part of the country. A fifth marine, wounded in a roadside bomb attack in Farah Province on Wednesday, died from wounds.

Taking a page from the war in Iraq, Afghan insurgents have been rapidly making homemade bombs their preferred weapon against the soldiers of the American-led coalition. There were 465 bomb attacks against coalition troops in May, more than twice the number from the same period the year before.

The deaths on Thursday brought to 11 the number of Americans killed so far in August, with the month less than a week old, said Chief Petty Officer Brian Naranjo said. In July, 76 American and NATO soldiers were killed according to icasualties.org.

1. Quite right. I forgot we had two wars going on.
I've heard hardly any news about either Iraq or Afghanistan. Money is being pissed away and body bags continue to be flown back to the US. Where is the outrage? Where is the news coverage?

I thought we were getting out of Iraq? Instead we are still there and escalating in Afghanistan. Huh??

2. We need to see the flag-draped coffins,
they should be shown on the news every time there are casualties. We need newspeople to do more than stand in front of the camera and repeat the 5 o'clock follies (Michael Ware is one of the few that did). This needs to be in the living rooms of Americans every night, and then maybe there will be enough pressure for our troops to leave this quagmire.

9. It means to have a good or prosperous journey,
I use it as a term of condolences and because I wish them a good journey in whatever comes after death.

11. Nothing comes next.
They are just dead. Im not sure how that helps them then. They are just dead for a war that doesn't make sense.

12. Ha, I knew that was what this was about.
"Nothing comes next." I don't believe that. I believe that something does come next. How do you know what happens?

"Im not sure how that helps them then." They are beyond help from you or me. It's about condolences and respect for the dead.

22. " It's about condolences and respect for the dead."
Exactly. Thanks and may "our higher power" (I believe "God") bless and hold their beloved families close.

Please remember that it's not the enlisted or company grade officers who make the big bucks or pave their careers off of these senseless occupations.

It's always the ground mid and low level Marines, Soldiers and Sailors who pay the "most precious price" for the arrogance of much older and more powerful POLITICIANS and GENERAL OFFICERS.

My family honors our military. However, let's stop misusing them for "lost causes."

4. Someone please explain to me again why we're there.
Edited on Thu Aug-06-09 08:38 PM by PurityOfEssence
Then explain to me what our objective is.

While you're at it, how about what our plan is for accomplishing that objective...

It's a hell of a pointless dustbowl of a dump; besides the Caspian pipeline, what the hell's the point? Are we going to out-macho a bunch of tribal warlords? Is this just to prove that a Democrat's not a lily-liver? Do we REALLY think this is going to do ANYTHING to impede those who would hit us domesticallly? Do we think we can get out of this without looking like a muscle-bound Goliath getting run ragged by the locals?

Have we learned nothing?

32. It is about dominating the transport of hydrocarbons to Europe and Asia.
Objective: Insert a massive US-dominated Western military presence at the borders of both Russia and China, thus undermining Russian attempts to control energy transport to the EU, China and Japan, while at the same time undermining Chinese attempts to ensure energy security and making the US the sole guarantor of energy security for the EU, China, Japan and India, among others.

Original Plan (now in tatters): subdue the country in two weeks

Revised plan: Keep the battle going for 100 years or until Caspian hydrocarbons are exhausted, whichever comes first, thus justifying the massive bases that are being built to ensure Objective above.

The US has no intention of leaving, no matter how bad things get. US and other NATO casualties mean nothing to the players of the Great Game.

- 50 nations now or shortly to be involved trying to subdue the bad guys.

14. Here's a real question: does anyone even know why the U.S. is there?
Other than "a footprint in the region" and the usual "we're a war-mongering nation", just what is the stated goal of being there? I'm serious, I don't even know why our country is there and can say without a doubt that we shouldn't be there if the reason(s) aren't even known.
