Fla. doctor ousted after denouncing doughnuts

PENSACOLA, Fla. - Dr. Jason Newsom railed against burgers, french fries, fried chicken and sweet tea in his campaign to promote better eating in a part of the country known as the Redneck Riviera. He might still be leading the charge if he had only left the doughnuts alone.

A 38-year-old former Army doctor who served in Iraq, Newsom returned home to Panama City a few years ago to run the Bay County Health Department and launched a one-man war on obesity by posting sardonic warnings on an electronic sign outside:

"French Fries Thunder Thighs."

Then he parodied "America Runs on Dunkin'," the doughnut chain's slogan, with: "America Dies on Dunkin'."

Some power players in the Gulf Coast tourist town decided they had had their fill.

I kind of side with the doctor on this - clever signs. Those "fat cat" donut shop owners need to get a friggin' sense of humor.

quit the nannying. Nothing better than a good burger (or anything with bacon for that matter.)

I'd just have a problem if they actually got all nanny state about it and, say, outlawed doughnuts or something.

so I wouldn't worry about donuts.

That's not just denouncing donuts, that's making an unfounded and indefensible accusation against a specific company.

Love them dunked in cold milk or coffee.

Springerle a Christmas cookie.

1 pound powdered sugar, sifted
4 eggs
4 1/2 cups cake flour
2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon lemon zest
Crushed anise seeds

Beat the eggs with an electric mixer for 10 minutes. Gradually beat in the sugar. Sift together the flour, baking powder and salt. Gradually add the dry ingredients along with the lemon zest and a 1/2 teaspoon of the anise seeds to the egg mixture. Mix well. Cover tightly and chill 4-5 hours. Divide the dough into fourths. Roll 1/4" thick, dust lightly with flour and press with springerle mold*. Cut the individual cookies apart with a cutter wheel. Place them on a lightly floured surface, cover with a towel and let stand to dry overnight. Grease baking sheets and sprinkle them with anise seeds. Brush the excess flour from the cookies, place them on the sheets and bake at 250F for 25 to 30 minutes. Store in an airtight container.

Note: *Springerle, also known as Eierzucker, are shaped with special wooden molds used to stamp designs into the cookies. They can also come in the form of a roller. These items can be found by clicking on the links at right, or by visiting specialty food stores or gift shops specializing in Swiss and German keepsakes. If you cannot find a springerle board, just cut the cookies in squares or cut them with cookie cutters, or use the other popular cookie stamps that are available.

Really at this point does anyone not realize excessive smoking, drinking, fatty foods, or inactivity is unhealthy?

Problem is many don't care.

If I chose to have a doughnut every six months or so is that really going to kill me? This guy went way over the top.

is not the way to get people to change habits. The doctor should be professional enough to have a plan that is not based on shame and insults.

What's next? Electrocute him because he says we need more fruit and veggies in our diet?
