Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett Attacked
Source: 620AM WTMJ

By Nick Iannelli
WEST ALLIS - Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett is in stable condition at the hospital after a suspect beat him with a pipe in West Allis.
Police say the mayor was walking away from the Wisconsin State Fair in the 8700 block of W. Orchard Street when he heard a woman cry for help. She was in a domestic dispute, being attacked by a man.

According to authorities, that's when Barrett pulled out a phone to call police, causing the suspect to run at Barrett with a metal pipe and beat him repeatedly in the head.

The suspect was able to get away and the mayor was brought to the hospital with head injuries. He was reportedly alert and talking.

The Milwaukee Police Department is now assisting West Allis police in finding the suspect. Authorities are calling the man a "known" suspect with a criminal record.

But good for him for stepping in against domestic violence.

15. Can't we think of another name, though? Rudy tarnished that one.
People told him not to put the City's emergency response operations in the WTC because it was bound to be attacked again. He put them there anyway. The Fire and police departments begged him for decent communications equipment, saying their lives amd operations were being endangered for lack of it. He refused because communications equipment costs money.

Terrorists fly into the WTC while he is mayor. Everything everyone predicted to him came o horrible fruition. Voila! He's been America's Mayor ever since, earning big consulting fees on terrorism, too. I'll retire to Bedlam.

This guy deserves so much better.

40. good point
The situation might have become violent if the mayor had a gun like any other law abiding citizen with a carry permit. Thank goodness he was smart enough to not buy and carry one of those scary guns!

Now, let's ban pipes! Somebody could get hurt with one of those things!

Its a classic case where the display of a weapon could easily have caused the perp to run and fewer injuries all around.

Not likely but a possibility that has to be acknowledged.

Guns are not for display. When you pull it out you better be ready to use it.

27. Close, Sidearm is control of a situation
giving a person a verbal order to stop is reasonable if the situation allows. But , you are correct if you pull it you better be ready to fire it.

Police use gunpoint to control a subject much more often than lethal force.

FYI 10% of gunshot from pistols wounds are fatal. Basically if you are still alive after being hit you will probably live.

84. He can thank Doyle for this
Doyle the "Draft Dodging Coward" walks around with dozens of state cops at his side, and vetoed concealed carry.

Milwaukee is a cesspool of convicted felons who are "strapped up" in violation of most civilized people's rights.

26. Once a bullet hits a person
it deforms and dumps energy. Handgun rounds are explicitly designed not to punch through people and keep going. Pointing a weapon may have prevented being hit with a pipe, however if that did not work, shooting a person prevents them from bashing your skull.

28. Please don't turn this into a "gun rights" argument.
Mayor Barrett is entitled to a security detail at his discretion. He was at the State Fair with his family and did not have security with him. If anything, THAT would have been the safer route... not carrying a fucking gun when you're at the fair... with your FAMILY (and thousands of others).

I'm not remotely surprised he put himself in harm's way to help.

We recently attended a festival where he was polka-ing with some random lady in the audience as the UW band played. He's been at many political/social functions I've been to, and he always just totally hangs with everyone, talks about whatever, just has a good time.

This makes me terribly sad. I hope they lock up that violent fartsack for a long, long time. Get well quickly, Mayor Barrett. :( :patriot:

Suspect arrested in beating of Mayor Barrett
By Nicholas Penzenstadler of the Journal Sentinel
Updated: Aug. 16, 2009 2:28 p.m.

A 20-year-old man was arrested and is being questioned Sunday in connection with Saturday's beating of Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett as the mayor was leaving State Fair Park in West Allis, Police Chief Edward A. Flynn announced at an afternoon press conference.

Milwaukee police arrested Anthony J. Peters about noon Sunday near 17th St. and State St., Flynn said. Peters has an extensive arrest record, including other assault charges, and Barrett stepped in while Peters was threatening other violent acts, West Allis Police Chief Mike Jungbluth said.

"Last night, he was a totally violent and vicious thug, and that's how he behaved," Flynn said during a 2 p.m. conference at the home of Barrett's brother, John Barrett.

A tearful John Barrett said his brother suffered serious injuries, but that doctors said he was expected to recover.

"He still has a good sense of humor and he's a great brother," said John Barrett, the Milwaukee County Clerk of Circuit Court. "Tom stepped up and did the right thing. He called 911 and tried to calm the situation, protecting a grandmother and child."

John beat Mary. (active)
Mary was beaten by John. (passive)
Mary was beaten. (passive)
Mary was battered. (passive)
Mary is a battered woman. (active)

"John has left the conversation long ago, while Mary evolves into the active victim," Katz said. "This evolution of victim-blaming is very pervasive in our society, because this is how our whole power structure is set up. We start asking why Mary put herself into a position to be beaten by John."

"If we really want to work on prevention, we need to start asking questions about John, not Mary," Katz said. "We won't get anything done until we start treating these issues as men's issues and shift the paradigm at the cultural level."

Don't blame this on "the woman" mentioned in this story. The creep did this, not her. And if wasn't her, it would have been someone else.
