Ex-wife admits Kuwait wedding arson
Source: Al Jazeera

The 23-year-old told police she poured petrol around the packed wedding tent and set it on fire to avenge her ex-husband's "bad 'treatment" of her before their divorce, Kuwait's Al-Qabas newspaper said on Monday.

Colonel Mohammad al-Saber, an interior ministry spokesman, said: "We have identified the perpetrator who confessed to committing the crime for personal reasons."

He told Kuwaiti television the fire engulfed the tent in just three minutes.

The bride escaped injured, but her mother and sister were killed.

39. well, I was hoping you weren't

Since Kuwait is not a "strict fundie nation"; women are not stoned in Kuwait, women are not forced to cover themselves, or even just their heads, in Kuwait, women vote in Kuwait, women are elected to parliament in Kuwait ... and I've kind of been trying to get this across.

22. why in the FUCK would you say this?

I wonder if she'll be stoned to death?

Why? Because you're an ignorant ethnocentric xenophobe?

Maybe because that's how they do it in Texas, so you figure that's how everybody else does it?

Ask the Kuwaitis what they think of Texas laws that allow Texans to shoot people dead for stealing their stereos.

Have a little fucking reality for breakfast.

The location of the tent has been criticised by officials because the close proximity of buildings hampered the rescue operation.

Jahra is not known for the luxurious and spacious mansions found in other parts of Kuwait. Its brick and corrugated iron buildings house many of the country’s settled Bedouin nomads and stateless locals.

The minister of the interior, Sheikh Jaber Khalid al Sabah, vowed at the cabinet’s weekly meeting in Seif Palace that the criminal will be brought to justice.

The emir, Sheikh Sabah al Ahmad al Sabah, expressed his condolences at a special meeting of the cabinet on Sunday. The cabinet set up an emergency committee including the ministers of interior and health, the municipality and the fire department to look at the tragedy and find ways to ensure it is not repeated.

The victims are being treated at a specialized hospital burn centre. DNA is being used to identify the deceased where necessary.

Women in Kuwait got the vote in 2005; in the last election, 4 women were elected (one of whom was already in Cabinet). (You might want to check when women were fully enfranchised in Switzerland, home of everybody's favourite gun culture.)

There is serious sex discrimination in Kuwait, although women are not subject to dress restrictions, own property, etc.; and the governmental system is relatively democratic in practice if not in theory. The entire Arab/Muslim world is not Afghanistan under the Taliban. Really.

Educate your self. Your ignorance is insulting.

34. You really like the word Fuck don't you!
Despite these significant developments, Kuwaiti women still face discrimination in many areas of life. They remain prohibited from serving as judges and joining the military, have unequal marital rights, and are not allowed to pass their nationality on to their children and foreign-born husbands. They also lack equal rights in laws regulating social security, pensions, and inheritance. Provisions regarding inheritance, however, are mandated in the Koran and take into consideration that men, legally and socially, bear the burden of fiscal responsibility for all female family members. As a result there is little, if any, political or popular will to change this practice.

38. It is common courtesy to cite your source

It is also common decency not to make the kind of ignorant and insulting remarks you started out with, all about "they" and "them" and, if I recall correctly, "their women" (a strange turn of phrase for somebody pretending to care about the women). None of which are remotely supported by the text you quote.

In Morocco, 20% of judges are women. Those Arabs/Muslims, they're just all the damned same, aren't they?

Or maybe she was and figured seeing his new almost-bride burned to death or disfigured would be worse for him than merely dying.

5. Oh. my. god.
She's mad at her ex, so she torches the women and children's tent instead of the men's tent, where he was (not that I'd approve of that, either).

:wtf:

I think she's probably as good as dead herself -- but she had to know that when she did this horrendous thing.

Edited on Mon Aug-17-09 12:42 PM by bkkyosemite
beat the sh*t out of her and raped her everyday. She must have been treated very badly as they do treat their women like slaves there. And the men think they can screw around, demand sex, rape, beat and have custody of the children like women are nothing but property. That is what sickens me.

Yes she should not have done this horrible thing but what lead her to it I bet was not just some ugly words the husband shouted at her.

Edit: How come she was divorced from him. All he has to do is make it with another woman and want to be with the new chick on the block and say to his wife I divorce you and that's it and walk away.

20. To both her and her family, very expensive to the guy's family
She gets gold, jewelry, clothes etc.... A girl can demand (in a contract) what she wants b4 engagement is set.

I AM NOT SOME KIND OF EXPERT....

But I don't think that a guy's family would ask for dowry following divorce but a dowry makes it a bit tough for the girl to walk out on the marriage.

Chances are the guy divorced the woman & she has not excepted it. It's stated that she 23, pretty young to be a divorced woman. I wonder if she refused him to take a second wife therefore he divorced her. Traditionally, if a married man wants to take another wife, he must ask permission of his first wife to give him the green light (I don't know if it is stated in the Quran). But many Arab/Muslim men DON'T follow that.

She can remarry, I doubt she ever will since she'll be rotting in jail forever. No man would marry a disgraced woman.

Why in the world was she anywhere near the wedding party? O.o

...I hope this helps :)
