Dogfighters get creative as spotlight on Vick case fades

(CNN) -- When pro quarterback Michael Vick pleaded guilty to bankrolling a dogfighting operation in 2007, there was a spike in reports of dogfighting in the United States.

But when the headlines faded, the blood sport grew stronger and went even more underground, with thugs taking inventive precautions to keep police at bay, animal cruelty experts say.

"They know it's just not smart to have large crowds anymore, so we've seen fights where you've got the two handlers, a referee and Web cams everywhere broadcasting the fight on the Internet," said Mark Kumpf, an investigator based in Ohio who directs the National Animal Control Association.

Fights are also being staged on the move -- in 18-wheelers. "These guys are very sophisticated," Kumpf said. "If you're driving down the road, there could be dogs in that truck driving next to you that are dying."

Crims will always attempt to be more creative I think, regardless of the industry.

What's also nice is that there's a nice bounty on every single dogfighter's head. Might even things out a bit.

about that bastard Vick being put back in a position of possible admiration by young people when he doesn't deserve it. All of them are pieces of shit.

But today I got an email from the Humane Society, one of the largest charities I support, and strangely enough, Michael Vick was the subject of that email. Evidently, Vick is working with the HSUS in telling young people to get away from dog-fighting, and to respect animals. I will post the email in GD. I still don't like him because of the past, but I have to face that even people like Vick can help shape a better future for some animals and some young people.

said losing all that money in football didn't matter and some other bald faced lies. People are telling this piece of feces what to say nothing is genuine from this crrep. that bullshit about this was were i was from and what i knew. well he had been way away from the environment he grew up in when he got caught. i hope somebody rips his head off.

Vick has shown NO remorse for what he did, but will continue to get wealthy. The HSUS has decided to cynically take advantage of his notoriety. There's no reason to believe he'd be at all interested in helping dogs or children, if he didn't believe his football contract were at stake.

The funds I used to give to the HSUS will now be added to funds I already donate to PETA, who are much more realistic about who and what Vick is. PETA says they met with him before his conviction, but caught him in a series of lies, so ended any relationship with him. I wish the HSUS had as much integrity.
