Fiorina takes initial step to challenge Boxer
Source: CNN

(CNN) — Former Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina is taking the initial steps to challenge California Democrat Barbara Boxer for her Senate seat, a move that could lay the groundwork for one of the most high profile and expensive contests of 2010.

Fiorina, the first woman to lead a Fortune 500 company and a former surrogate for John McCain's presidential bid, filed a tax identification number and registered a campaign committee with the IRS Tuesday called "Carly for California."

"The people of California have serious concerns about job creation, economic growth and the role of government in solving problems that touch each of ourlives," Fiorina said in a statement. "I have received a great deal of encouragement to make a run for the Senate in 2010 from people across the political spectrum because these are all issues that need focused attention in Washington, D.C."

Under the new committee, Fiorina will begin to aggressively raise money as well as speak with policy experts and campaign advisors, spokeswoman Beth Miller told CNN.

to be replaced with Ahnold and since then their economy has completely tanked. It would not surprise me one bit if they elected this woman. They are not "all there" in California.

73. Actually Grey Davis
was an obscenity who did himself in first...

He was a coward about crime and punishment -- pro-death, pro-lock-em-up, bought and paid for by the prison guard's so-called "union"...

He was a wimp about the phony electrical "crisis" created by Enron, PG&E, et. al. He sold the farm on that one!

He vetoed a lot of good legislation for human rights, justice, etc.

He was the best Republican-Lite money could buy...

So, with Mr. Car Alarm, Darrel Issa's milllions backing him, the other fake, republican-lite the SteroidenGroppenFuhrer was installed -- to do the exact same shit from the "R" side.

47. I'll never forget the TWO brand new HP desktop computers I brought back in a row
The first one would not even power on. The second had some other major problem. This was in 03, maybe 04 when CarLIE was at the helm of HP. I've never bought another again.

I finally got a Sony Vaio, which has never crashed in the 6 yrs. I've owned it.

...they basically credited her with destroying the corporate culture and HP's reputation as "one of the best companies to work for."

I did a temp stint at HP while she was there...never saw her during that time...and the first word that comes to mind when describing the day-to-day mood of the place is "sour." Lots and lots and lots of very unhappy worker bees.

4. Let's talk HP job creation, economic growth, and problem solving. . .
eh, that'd be kind of unfair, though, as that all occurred only after Fiorina was forced out as CEO.

But hey, stock did rise considerably in the hours after she was ousted, by as much 10.5 percent! But let's hear from a Wall Street analyst for why that happened:

"The stock is up a bit on the fact that nobody liked Carly's leadership all that much," said Robert Cihra, an analyst with Fulcrum Global Partners. "The Street had lost all faith in her and the market's hope is that anyone will be better."

An account of Fiorina's whole wondrous saga as the head of a Fortune 500 company can be found here:

which was both off-topic and hasn't flown with any medieval historian since, what 1950? I think she yakked about science training to compete with a globalized world (or we could have tariffs)
she's indistinguishable from Feinstein, but probably has less blood on her hands

she was the worst CEO in Fortune 500 history.

And her "surrogate" work for McCain last year was simply horrible. Neocons don't like her, fundies don't like her, even old school fiscal conservatives don't like her. What the hell is her "base"?

21. Tough Challenge for Boxer
She has significant personal money to fund a start up campaign. She will raise a ton of money Nationally. She will position herself as a Centrist. She is well spoken and compared to Barbara Boxer she is a stunning beauty. Boxer will be 70 during the next campaign and was not a great campaigner when she was younger. This is a serious threat and this seat is in play. Don't take this one lightly. You California folks better get to work early.

campaigning for McCain. She should up on some talk show wearing enough gold to pave Cleveland. This was right when the economy was crashing. Someone must have told her to tone it down a bit because in the rest of her appearances she kept the bling to a minimum.

She didn't last long though. She made some comment about McCain being pro-choice and that was the end of Carly.

57. If she is as Popular as she was with the Employees of HP, she doesn't have a chance.
I did some contracting at HP a few years ago, and the tenured employees, you know, the ones that eactually made stuff, hated her guts. I had never seen employee's so pissed off about any member of the executive leadership before, and it was unsettling to me.

Then, it became clear that she was a H-1B abusing fool, and was shipping many jobs offshore, riding the wave of Globalization like all the other assholes.

When she finally popped up in the McCain campaign, that personal experience I had at HP connected and illustrated why the people at HP hated her so much.

I'm sure the stockholders love her long time though.

58. Wow. That's an amazingly bad choice.
Carly Fiorino may be single-handedly responsible for this annoying phenomenon, which seems like a gold-paved method for spotting undervalued companies.

The team from the University of Exeter's School of Psychology and Business School conducted a comprehensive analysis of performance data from all FTSE 100 companies between 2001 and 2005. This found that companies with all-male boards had a market valuation equivalent to 166% of their book value, while companies with at least one female board member had a market value equal to just 121% of book value.

And don't get me wrong! I think it sucks that chauvinism is statistically identifiable in stock prices. But Fiorino's acquisition of the ailing Compaq brand was considered by everyone--everyone--to be a stupid move, and the aftermath of her tenure at HP pretty much confirms it. This one incident may be responsible for much of the above described disparity.

61. Fiorina's decision to license the Ipod totally f'd up their product line, customers and partners...
... at the time, since the AAC downloads that Apple was supporting with the Ipod were totally incompatible with the existing HP portable devices offerings, and the software they had bundled with them.

And they had a lot of incompatibilities for months with this brainless and non-thinking move by Fiorina that thought everything was a "marketing" decision from her limited experience, not a technical one that sometimes can be totally messed up if not done thoughtfully.

I worked for a company that supported their existing portable product with music, and we got unceremoniously dumped, and I think many in HP weren't to happy about that as were we and many of their existing customers. Itunes for windows wasn't available at the time of that announcement.

62. Personal anecdote
Edited on Tue Aug-18-09 10:03 PM by IDemo
I worked at HP for several years as a contractor, including during the Carly reign. I witnessed a longtime HP'er turn beet red with anger and slam his fist into the wall after talking about the impact she had on his stock. Also saw several people sing "Ding dong the witch is dead" the day the news hit they had shitcanned her.

"No American has a God-given right to a job". Least of all you, Carly.

I'm sure someone will come up with a link though, the all of the brains we have on DU combined, we can usually dig up "Flattering" historical notes.

she made a statement that neither McCain nor Palin would be capable of running a business.

edit - it may have actually been that neither McCain nor Obama could run a business. Palin would be self evident anyway.

75. Assuming I have a job then, I'll earmark some funds for Boxer.
In the meantime, let's see Carly make it through the primaries. Who's her competition?
